So yesterday on break I was driving and found a place thats basically one giant yard sale. They buy up yard sales then resell the items. So I stopped in and ended up buying 3 SK screwdrivers, there was surface rust on all of them, and also bought an 11' SO extension which also had some surface rust all for $1.86 including tax. So I soaked them in vinegar, they came out great but the chrome was peeling on all of them, so when the SO and American Tool trucks came by today I tried to warrenty them out and was successful. My SO guy (New guy finally) said that the extension was at least 30 years old.

So long story short I got an 11 inch knurled SO extension/4 inch 6 inch 8 inch #2 phillips SK sure grip screwdrivers valued at $67 for $1.86

I am going to check that store every week now

Wowwww!!! Very nice score!!! You're right though, rusty stuff is often overlooked and can be salvaged (or warrantied).

You know thats one thing thats always amazed me... generally rust/corrosion is not covered under a lifetime warranty. However I've taken a few things into the local SK dealer and they've handed me brand new pieces in its stead. Kinda cool. Never tried with the S/O drivers but I've had them warranty a couple other things I didn't think they would. Good find for sure and even better luck with your truck guys!

Well done... yard sales are fun. The only thing is that around here, you seem to have to go to 10 sucky ones for every 1 good one you find....

I do not even bother with gas prices. I would say 1 out of every 20 around me will have a tool. If you are looking for baby clothes or star wars cups then jackpot!!

Technically if you have a yard sale you are supposed to collect tax.. at least thats the way it is around here. I know its been that way at most swap meets I've attended as well. Usually a local tax man will come around reminding everyone to file what they make on their income taxes. I don't think most people do though! For good reason.. what a pain.

Agreed. Most yard sales in my area are selling the kind of **** that I'm looking to get rid of. My yard sale last month was an exception. I had lots of tools for sale.

That's some funny sh*t, there...

He said it was a place that buys up yard sale leftovers or whatever, so it's probably a legitimate business that has to charge tax.

Hey, I went to my first estate sales on Saturday and was surprised when they added sales tax to my purchases. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised since it was being run by a company. Do all estate sales charge sales tax?

As a general rule estate sales, like auctions, that are run by actual companies that provide a service (pricing, advertising, selling, etc) are required to collect tax. If you see an estate sale that is just something the family put together chances are you won't pay tax. Auctions always charge tax as well. I've yet to see a yard sale that charged tax though!

And what did you find for me there?:)

Well, the guy who lived there was, at some point, a mechanic and gunsmith so he supposedly had tons and tons of tools and gun stuff. They made sure to advertise this point in the paper (it was a Friday/Saturday estate sale). Since I had to work on Friday, you guessed it, 99% of the good tools were gone by Saturday!!!

The only good thing was that everything was 50% off on Saturday. The only things I could scrape up were a big old Irwin screwdriver, SK Wayne 1/4" spinner handle w/ bit holder and an Apex bit, pair of C-man snap ring pliers, Ridgid strap wrench, and a Stanley (USA) screwdriver. I paid about $13 with tax for this stuff so I did ok I suppose. Next time I'm going to find a way to make it on Friday. :)

I only paid 50% of marked price at Saturday's estate sale, but the full price didn't stike me as a really good deal. Certainly not any better then I find at the flea market. Is this the norm, or should I try out more estate sales before making a determination?

It is a store that buys up yard sales so they have to collect tax and the name of the place is just Yard Sale, its basically one big garage filled with everything and anything. Most of it is 50 cents or 1 dollar except for the big stuff

Yeah, you should. Most of the estate sales around here are auctions, and that's all I bother with. You'll be surprised how many power tools $75 will get you at some of these.

I'm in the market for an American chop saw right now, but I don't want to pay more than $20 for it. My Forney stick welder was $35 at the last sale I went to. They also had an Atlas drill press that I wanted, but it went for $25 which was more than I was willing to pay. Pretty much around here, I like to stick to a max of $40 on anything.

I'm still training my wife to understand the auctioneer. She could've got us a very large picnic table for $10 or less if she wasn't thinking the auctioneer was saying $25 instead of $5.

Also, estate sales are also where I prefer to buy chain and other rigging tools. I bought nearly 100 feet of 30 ton chain of various lengths between 6 feet an 15 feet for $15 once. It's nice to finally have something to use the boomer with that I got for $5.
