Once better than they are now, but never really good AFAIK...
90% of that stuff I see is just your standard re branded imports from China. They still make a few things in the USA. I wonder why they even bother. They sell some sets at Pep Boys that are so cheap that they must be giving them away in order to drive traffic into the store.
I actually have a set of their Sheffield SuperPro branded wood chisels that were made in the USA. I find it funny that something made in the USA has a name to make it sound like it is from England. I guess it goes both ways.

Got a set of Great Neck ratcheting box wrenches from K-Mart about 25 years ago. They're OK but nothing special. I use them mostly for furniture repairs and woodworking. Wouldn't trust them with a great deal of torque. Great Neck made all kinds of homeowner type tools. Handsaws, hammers, chisels, pliers, etc. Kind of like Stanley but from Taiwan.

They looked just like the the williams and blue point ratchets I've seen lately. I didn't think they looked any worse than any other taiwan tools I've seen. I had to buy a 32mm the other day to do a job, and it held up fine to a pretty big impact.
I have a couple odds and ends that I have picked up on sale when the tools seems decent. I don't use them for my major jobs, but I keep a few in my hall closet and one of there reversible screwdrivers in my console (with an allied tool set under my seat)...
Eventually I want to get a top notch set for the car, but the ones I have found are either too limited or have too many tools. My allied set gives me a mix of bits, adj wrench, pliers, hammer, hex keys and sockets and a couple other odds and ends.
If anyone knows a set like that from a better maker that comes in a small case that can fit under a seat let me know.

Ditto.
I bought that same socket last year from Advance auto parts. I was in a pinch, needed to pull a front wheel bearing on my buddy's Explorer. The socket did its job just fine. I'll probably never need it again though.

I have picked up a couple Great neck ratchets at flea markets only to put them back down, Thinking they were another brand..... they copied a familiar style... Any guess who they copied?
They are homeowner tools.... below Craftsman... Yes, they are shiny, so are the new Pittsburg HF Wrenches.
Good for a weekend job...

My co wroker has a few wrenches . There ok , I've seen them at princess auto , and there cheap too. I would rather buy Mastercraft over Greatneck .

The older ones from the seventies ( I got the set at Saxons for $4.99) are of decent quality for non professional or occasional work. I have a set of ratchet ASE box wrenches that have seen much action especially around the house (for the wife and kids) and do a good job on non corroded nuts/bolts.
They are cheap at the flea market and you can get a good large tool box full of theses tools for around 25 to 30 dollars.
If you have to lend out tools these are the one to lend out as it is worth 25-30 dollars to get rid of a favor "repayment".
If the tools are never returned not such a big deal and you get rid of the favor repayment and the person /mooch cannot come back to ask for lent tools again!!
It is always a good idea to have cheap tools to lend out as reality often "trumps" the rule to never lend out tools.

They were found in the 99 cent boxes at implement dealers and hardware stores. I wanted to buy a set of farmer pliers once, and my Dad told me they were junk. If they were junk then, 45 years ago, I doubt if they are any better now.
