Greenlee Knock out Punches
Greenlee part # 730EBB-120 Last time I inquired, they were around $450 in the states + Large 3/4" socket wrench, and 2" socket. I wouldn't use anything less than 19" long socket wrench. Estimated purchase price of $550 new.

How about a 120mm hole saw ($16.50) and an old file or Dremmel tool? I did a google search and there's a whole lot of discussions about making a clean 120mm hole.

On a side note I sometimes see the hydraulic pump for those Green Lee chassis punches at auctions quite reasonably bought, that would be nice for holes that large.

The bad thing about a hole saw is the chips that can get into the panel. Those can cause flashover.
Harbour Freight has a hydraulic KO set, model 96718, for less than $100. This set goes from 3/4" - 2". Works very well. I bought one to do a Home Depot in Texas. I thought if it lasted one job and got tossed it would pay for itself. I have used it on three jobs and have a set of 4" dies it handles without any problems.

Greenlee has several sets of knock out dies. Set 7238SB, Slugbuster is a ratcheting set 1/2" - 2" with the ratching wrench. They go new on the internet from $250 - 400. Lowes and Home Depot carry them. I believe the price is around $320.

I got mine off of ebay for $160 used.

There's a few fancy high tech gadgets that can handle the chips, one's a vacuum cleaner, the other an air blow gun, could even use a magnet.

??????

This is true if you are in a shop. You have access to a vacuum or air compresser. In new construction you don't always have that access.

Flashover. If you are making a hole in a live electrical panel with a hole saw, chips getting down into the breakers is not a good thing.

You're thinking of arc flash, flashover has to do with ignition points and arc flash wouldn't be an issue, maybe a short. Anyhow these are computer case frames that he's putting fans in and from the looks of it not the type of thing you'd be doing in the field.

The real question is why people are wasting money putting fancy fans on a computer, money that could be spent on tools.

Probaly going to drill a hole to get the KO tool in there, so I don't see how you avoid it. Maybe one should de-energize the panel before modifying

I hope you didn't buy a $500 tool to make a hole in a computer case.
Just wait until Bill shows you the other tools he uses for his mods and modding products. His shop and tools, the aforementioned 4-1/2" SlugBuster included, are envied far and wide by the modding community. That's not even mentioning his revered skills.

If anybody could use a $500 knock out punch to its full potential "making holes in a computer case," it's Bill.

What's the modding community? Computer modifications?
