Greenfield Tap Handle Jaw Replacement

Hello all,

I recently acquired a GTD number 7 tap handle. Trying to adjust the jaws to close on a tap is quite difficult, so I took it apart to see what the issue is. It looks like the threads on the moving jaw, which are left hand, are somewhat rounded over. I would like to replace the jaws or get a tap and die set to repair the threads. I used my thread pitch gauge and it looks like they are a 7/16-18 LH thread. (defeated sigh) I quadruple checked, its not 7/16-14 or 20.

Do any of you fine folks know where a fella can get either replacement jaws for a GTD #7 or, a set of 7/16-18 LH tap and die? If these two options are not available, do any of you have any suggestions on how to clean up gakked threads without a die?

Thanks for your wisdom in advance.

An 18 tpi thread file maybe. Otherwise, get someone to chase the thread on a lathe. You must like the tap handle!

Sounds like it might be BSF. Pitch is right and it will look rounded compared to a US thread. Personally I'd try working it with a little fine lapping compound unless the thread is really tight or obviously damaged.

Get the Lisle tap socket set and eliminate all your problems and make them all easier to use. The $20 set fits all taps up to 1/2 13 and let you use 1/4 or 3/8 extensions and ratchets on them. Win Win situation.
