Hello All,

Stumbled across this board a few weeks while seeking information on a shop build and realized immediately that there is a wealth of useful information here, so I was hooked.

In the very near future, around March or April if all works as we hope, my wife and I will be relocating to the Spokane, WA area, after 40 years for me, and 30 years for the wife, of life in Anchorage Alaska. Being that I like to research and plan and do for ourselves much as I am able, I began looking into the cost and design of a shop that I have always wanted, but was never able to afford here.

The move will allow me (I think) to build said shop, provided we do not find an home with an adequate pre-existing shop in place. What I have in mind is a 60' x 40' x 16', probably of steel and perhaps with an apartment in one corner. The shop will be primarily for auto maintenance and repair (I was a master mechanic for 23 years until a workplace injury ended that career), tinkering and some metal work. My wife has a creative side and she would like to get into metal sculpting, etc., and I have a interest in fabricating whatever I can. I would like to build a boat at some point as well as restore a car or two.

I am one of those guys who enjoys, and prefers, to do as much of my own work as I am able. I have little actual construction experience aside from what I have learned doing a major remodel of my current home and what I have learned from a close friend who is a general contractor. This looks like a great resource to help fill in some of the gaps where I do not need to hire a professional for a particular phase of the project.

Anyhow, apologies for getting long winded. Thanks for your time and willingness to share your knowledge.

Hello from Olympia, WA and welcome to the group! You're spot on with the amount of info and knowledge here. I just moved back home to WA after being gone for 16 years with the military. When shopping for a home I had a few requirements.....at least 10 acres of land, legal to shoot on the property, a shop to work on my vehicle projects. I was able to find a 3600 sf house on 15 acres, outside the city limits and legal to shoot on the property (we built a shooting range in the back pasture), two small detached shops, a two bedroom apartment behind the main house, and a large 1700 sf barn that I've turned into a workshop. Not sure what the market in Spokane has to offer but I have a close friend that lives there. Feel free to message me if you have any questions or need my friend to look at something for you.

AK: it's your intro thread so be as long winded as you like. we will all eventually know more about you as you let us find out about you and you learn about us. for now might i say welcome and in case you didn't know we all like pictures so post up a bunch.

I've seen several guys find big chunks of land north of Spokane for not a ton of money and build some nice homes and shops.

good luck with that.

cheers and again welcome
