Hello all, just found this site and just finalized my plans to kick off my modest 20x20 shop here in Wasilla Alaska once the winter is over. Plan on 10' walls 5/12 pitch on the roof, single 10'x8' garage door and a man door. Going to have a contractor to the shell / pad and then I will build out the inside. Look forward to picking your brains and will be posting pictures of the build out in April or May when it starts

Lived in AK for 40 years, lots of friends, family and memories. Grew up in Cooper Landing.
Worked almost everywhere except the panhandle.
Still have a sister, cousins, Aunt and Uncle up there in Wasilla, Palmer, and Anchorage.

Thanks Tubro, Remember in summer 1993 when I was late for morning formation the Sgt found a pile of that fine volcanic ask and made us scrape it all up, it was terrible. I wasn't here for the event I didn't get assigned here till May 93

I was at the Beluga River gas field for the Spurr eruption, 40 miles away, downwind. I collected several ziplock bags of the large-sand-grain sized ash from there. We were near enough to see the lightning!
I didn’t think to collect any of Redoubt’s far finer ash that fell on us at the Swanson River oil field, 66 miles away.

OP, presuming you were AF or Army at Ft Rich. I heard the ash was a real concern for filters and moving parts. Even worse than the Sandbox.

I was a USAF Civil Engineer on Elmendorf

My Father and my Grandfather were both stationed at Elmendorf, and I was born there.
My Grandfather retired as the Commander of the 517th Airlift Squadron at Elmendorf.

I was in High School in Soldotna when Redoubt blew in 89, I remember the ash cloud being dark enough that the streetlights turned on.

I graduated from Anchorage Highschool in 1958, I was selling the Anchorage Times on 4th Avenue during the eruption. I and a few others were pictured on the front page, wearing gas masks.

Welcome! I lived in Fairbanks and Valdez for about 4 years and really miss it. Made a lot of great memories up there!
