I just wanted to say hello and quickly introduce myself. I am from Alabama (ROLL TIDE!) but currently live in Mississippi. I am an IT Specialist/Systems Admin. I am 37 married, and finally have a job that does not require me to relocate every other year.

My wife and I bought a house here last year, and this year we are going to build a garage so I knew I needed to stop lurking and join to get tips and tricks that I might not be thinking about.

It is also good to know that there are people that feel the same way that I do about tools. You see tools are my life. My job and my hobbies could be done without Snap on,Matco, Proto, Wera etc., but where other sysadmins purchase tools once a year, I purchased mine once. I am not a tool snob mind you(love HF), I just love the feel of a quality tool in my hand, and as long as I have those tools in my hand I don't have to worry about failure at a critical moment when failure is not an option.

Just to get to know me a little better, here are some of my favorite tools:
Combo wrench -- snapon flank drive
Ratcheting wrenches-- SK Xframe
Ratchet -- 3/8 gearwrench 84 tooth, 3/8 Sk 72 tooth, 1/4 snapon flex head
Screwdriver-- Wera or Klein for regular, MAC for precision
Sockets-- Matco or Gearwrech
Torque Wrench -- Harbor Freight 1/2, Duralast 3/8

Thanks for reading, if have any IT related questions feel free to PM me.

LSU is my wife's school... we are very purple and gold here... and yes my family is from Alabama...

OP... welcome to the fun... you will go broke here if you let it happen...

I was also an IT guy... used to work for that PC company for a bit... retired now.

I have too many tools... so said my wife... so said my neighbors... so said my friends... as they all borrow them.

Timms: nice handle and Tim Allen was and is one of my favorite comedians. i still recall him doing the Showtime comedy special and telling everybody his ******* get hard going into Sears Craftsman's tool department.

that said i like the older tools so you'll probably find me on the vise thread or vintage tools, but i tend to get around.

i spent a week in Jackson, Mississippi in November 2005 just after Katrina and loved the people there.

best of luck with your move and sounds like you're going uphill a bit with your football loyalty while switching states, but that's entirely up to you.

WELCOME!!

Drivesitfar -- where in ths pacific Northwest are you? I spent about three months in Klamath Falls, OR last year....one of the most beatiful places that I have ever seen. As far as vintage tools, I have an old Wizrd set from the 70's but that is about it.

Timms: i'm in South Seattle so not quite as awesome as Klamath Falls or the OREGON COAST. here's the view out my living room window earlier today so i'm not complaining. another couple pictures out of a condo we stay at on Oregon Coast when we have time and waves almost hit our window on the second floor when storms roll in.

when you were in Klamath Falls did you go to to see the Redwoods and the Oregon Coast?

your tool collection will grow substancially if you pay attention here on GJ and hit a few sales in your area. the quality of tools i've bought since i joined GJ is amazing and most will last another 50-100+ years.

cheers

I retired after 25 years ... but kept going for a few after that on my own... now... I'm done... its been so long... I don't remember anybody's name. I started programming in High School about 1975... after some formal education I worked the big iron... main frames etc... communication protocols and peripheral protocols... machine language etc.

Then my boss said ... hey wanna work on a personal computer... the rest is history...

Drivesitfar -- Your place looks amazing, you are a lucky man. I did not go see the redwoods or the Oregon coast, but I did go to Crater Lake and the Lava Beds. I think Crater Lake is one of the most beautiful scenes in this country.

PelicanPines -- I never worked on mainframes, I missed all of that fun....at the moment I am doing image building, and network support. I am slowly learning application virtualization, because that is where everything is headed in my corner of the tech world.....probably everywhere else too.

Welcome Tim from another Mississippian!!! I'm in Starkville and a die hard Bulldog!!!! One thing I"m sure we can agree on is........GO SEC!!!! Glad to have you join up with us. There is another fellow here from the Tupelo area that just joined up too.

Make yourself at home and grab your favorite beverage from the fridge, but please no feet on the coffee table.

Thanks for the welcomeRewind97, MSU is my second favorite SEC team. Funny story, I went to the Kentucky game there last year....got tickets about 4 hours before the game, but I had my schedule confused, and I thought state was playing Mizzou.....my wife insisted that I wear a blue polo shirt to the game....so I sat in the student section, surrounded by rabid Bulldog fans wearing a Kentucky blue shirt. I really had everyone confused when I would stand up and cheer every time State scored.
