Hi all,

I've been reading up on installing a MaxJax lift so thought I should register. I've always been a bit of a gear head and like to do most of the wrenching on my cars and bikes. I just retired from a 35 year engineering career and plan on spending more time in the garage so trying to set it up a little better. I appreciate all of the information shared on this forum and I hope to contribute in kind.

Welcome from PA. I've always had a lot of fun around Nashville and Bristol, Tennessee's a nice state.

Tell me - honestly, warts and all - about Tennesee.

Wife and I are considering retirement states and Tenn is on the list.

We used to live in NC. I assume it's similar?

Thanks for all of the welcomes!

Regarding Tennessee, I moved here from Detroit for work in '82. It's been nice but we will eventually move when my wife retires (she grew up here). Tennessee has many good things going for it regarding cost of living, taxes, scenery, etc. I like the fact that there are 4 seasons yet I don't like the weather in middle Tennessee. It's too hot and humid in the summer and I end up staying inside in the AC. The air quality can be bad, especially in the spring when my allergies act up. The winters are still cold enough that you can't do much outside yet you can't enjoy winter sports since there's not real snow, more ice storms than anything. Spring and Fall are great but too short.

I'm not sure what part of NC you lived but I like western NC a lot and I would probably prefer eastern Tennessee over where we live now for the cooler mountain temperatures and more fun roads for motorcycling. I've always thought I would prefer being out west. We are considering the Bend OR area except for the state income tax being high. My wife sister lives in Seattle and we love it there. We are considering the Olympic Peninsula but not sure if we could manage the dark wet winters. Then again we may get an Airstream trailer and follow the weather during that time of year. Not sure if this helps but I've been giving a lot of thought to where to retire to and middle Tennessee is not on my list but different strokes for different folks as they say.

Carmen: it doesn't rain in Seattle everyday like we tell all the Californians and yesterday was sunny and 50's here. it was cold in the morning and it probably rains a little most everyday in the winter and spring. from June to October 70-80's and no bugs or humidity is why we still live here.

my wife won't move to Oregon because of the taxes too, but i love the Oregon coast and just watching the waves of the Pacific Ocean. Bend is sort of out of the way, but the people are friendly so not a bad choice. the olympic mountains on the ocean side rains more than Seattle and Sequim has more sunny days than any city in the state.

that's my 2 cents on moving to the PNW where i hang my hat.

just wanted to welcome you to the forum and feel free to post a few pictures and ask questions here if you have any.

cheers

drivesitfar - It will be nice to have the freedom to select a place to live without worrying about the work commute. We visited my sister-in-law during Christmas so my wife and I took 2 days to look around. As you say, the rain shadow area is not as rainy as other areas and the climate stays temperate on the coast yet it's not far to drive to a mountain to ski. My wife is partial to Port Townsend but I'm thinking Anacortes or possibly Bellingham. At this time I'm thinking not if but when will we move to the area.:D Thanks for the 2 cents!

Since this is the Garage Journal introduction I posted a couple of pictures of the garage.

Best,

Bob

Carmen: if you want me to ship you a huge vise for your bench i can put some PNW air in the crate. seriously nice garage and a couple nice rides too.

I was a Realtor up here for almost 30 years and retired in 2007 so i know a little about the area. pricing not so much now, but things are taking off again just to let you know. the areas you mentioned are not as expensive as Seattle, Bellevue and some of the areas close to those.

hope you enjoy the reading on the forum and happy to have another nice member. feel free to ask questions either here or on the threads if something doesn't sound right or if you need help and we'll try to find the answers.

cheers

Thanks fellas. I'm in the Boro...Murfreesboro.

Crosseville is a nice area. Played golf at Fairfield Glade a few times and I like motorcycle riding in your neck of the woods when I have time.
