How much blasting do you really plan to do? The stand up HF unit is of pretty good quality and was less than $200 out the door for me with the right sale/coupon combo.

Moderate. We do work on cars, so we need something a good size. The HF one is a tad on the small side for what I'd like, plus it doesn't have a built in vac.

Why dont you wait a month and go to fall Carlisle. There are always dealers there selling blast cabinets. I know TIP has a spot there and there are others. At least you can compare different cabinets all in one location. Plus the dealers will usually talk on the price.

What's TIP?

How do the prices there compare to this stuff?

Tip tools Google them, they go to all the big swap meets in the Penn. area. They are based in Canfield Ohio. I have one of their units and I can get parts and they have a pretty good tech line. Try that with HF

Check out HF #94274 , looks identical to the Greg Smith 420 with the same price.

You may be able to use some of the newer 20% off coupons from HF too, as they no longer contain a "only on in stock merchandise" exclusion (the online ones do, the print magazine coupons don't). That'd drop that cabinet price to $640...

the TP 960 pro is a nice unit.
we had one in the rebuild room where i worked. we used it constantly for cleaning water pump housings and heads. only thing that needed replacement was 1 pair of gloves, and nozzles in the gun.

Ended up picking up the Greg Smith 420 cabinet.

Pros:

  • Good price
  • Comes with a vacuum / dust collector
  • Works well
  • Sturdy

Cons:
  • They cut corners making it.
  • Doors needed to be custom mounted to close and work
  • Rubber hose for gun is only long enough to reach the center of the cabinet
  • Quick release fasteners often don't line up

Overall, it's a solid unit, but it wouldn't have taken much for them to have improved on it.

Just to be clear: are the Atlas blast cabinets imported? I found a model # sbc420 for $150 but prefer to throw money at USA stuff.

Yeah, based on those prices I reckon the $150 price for the local one is pretty good.

But then I just learned about the kit plans that are available where you can build and outfit your own cabinet, any size you want, by just using plywood for the box and then hardware and accessories. Seems kind of appealing.

They are barely a step above the HF units.
From there, you have to up quite a ways to get into professional grade cabinets with real dust collectors/separators, such as the Trinco cabinets.

Well, that's all I need to hear. Thanks for saving me $150, Steevo!
