The set in post 38 is the old version. Tekton released new pattern 1/2” impact sockets recently. Look at Tekton’s web site not amazon. Tekton doesn’t change shipping and gives points back. It’s better to just buy directly from them.

Keep in mind that they have not released (as far as I can see) a 1/2" 12 point socket set.

Those new Tekton impacts do like nice, but I am disappointed they're still Cr-V not Cr-Mo.

If you do a deep dive into the characteristics of the two, 6150 vs 4140 you will find there is no significant difference in the final product. What really counts is the heat treat. In theory, vanadium should impart a bit more ductility at the cost of hardness but heat teat can totally negate that.

I bought a Tekton 22mm for my pickup lug nuts. I've fondled it but haven't used it yet. I'm sure it will suit my purposes because I have the old style and they work alright for me.

I still don't understand why people discuss Tekton. I watch tool brand comparison videos on Youtube pretty much whenever Youtube recommends one to me. I haven't seen a ton of Tekton stuff tested but whenever I do see it, it seems to ****. Latest example of a video I saw where Tekton proves to be ****:

No this isn't testing a Tekton impact product, but the point is... Tekton has literally never proven its tools to be quality (that I've seen) yet somehow they get an extraordinary amount of discussion on forums and stuff. I don't understand why.

I do have a couple sets of GP sockets that have been great to me for almost 10 years. GP tools have been somewhat tested and reasonably proven to be good. Money no object, I would not buy GP but here in the real world where money absolutely matters, I would buy GP again (and will probably buy more of their products in the future).

I honestly don't think Tekton is comparable at all, and if they were, they need to step up and prove it. Their entire brand is an internet fad right now. When it comes to tools, it's the manufacturer's job to prove to me that they can do the job without fail, and Tekton has - from what I have seen - failed to prove anything. As such, I'm not really sure why people would be trusting them to get the job done.

I've only owned a few random Sunex sockets (and never any of their more expensive tools) and haven't seen much in the way of "torture testing" of their stuff, so I have insufficient experience with which to comment on them.

Simple cost benefit analysis. Tekton are a decent product, easily accessible and inexpensive. Most people don't abuse tools to the failure point so that just isn't a deciding factor. Some other brand is certainly stronger but if the Tekton is strong enough why should I care if brand x is stronger.

A few years back someone was peddling titanium lug nuts. The big selling point was that titanium is "x" times stronger than aluminum. And I thought at the time. Is there some issue with aluminum lug nuts failing? Have a bunch of people been wrecking their cars because their lug nuts have been failing and their wheels falling off? My point being that sometimes stronger is not necessarily better.

I have found their stuff to be on par with every other homeowner, DIY or light Pro use stuff....at least with their socket sets.

Plus they offer one stop shopping for socket sets, in 6pt with no skips deep and shallow, makes it so easy.

I do go elsewhere for wrenches(GW), screw drivers(williams), impact sockets(i like sunnex).

I don't think their is a significant difference in their tools vs. husky, GW, Kobalt etc......what really makes a difference is they make getting complete sets super easy, and if you break a tool they will take care of you.

IMHO, Tekton, Sunex then GP, though I don't any GP. Tekton is the easiest to warranty, just email them then they may ask for a photo then a new socket shows up in your mailbox. Sunex is easy but sometimes they'll give you the 3rd degree. GP, you hav to buy the tools from an authorized dealer and Amazon.com is not one of them. Otherwise the warranty is void if you get it from someone else. We have a dealer here on Oahu but they cost almost double of Amazon's cost.

I believe Amazon.com (NOT 3rd party sellers) is an authorized distributor of Grey Pneumatic products. You can double check with Grey Pneumatic directly to make sure, but I'm fairly certain that's what they've told me in the past. Home Depot also sells some Grey Pneumatic through their website, but their offering of GP products is fairly limited.

Sunex had the most complete 1/2" drive sets when I was buying last fall.
