hello all, i have had to warranty my first gp thing which happens to be a half inch universal and was wondering if everyone else has to wait for the new item to be shipped to your local dealer of gp and or pay the shipping on the new item? i had to pay 6.44 cents for freight on an item they had a price of 17.99 on(the universal). so although i can get three more for the price of one abouts, i wouldn't be buying tawainese tools if not for the fact that they have what i thought was a life time warranty just as craftsman and the such have.
please share your experiences.

i had the broken universal with me when i went to a new tool house that i found out was a distributor for gp and thought it was like any other company that you can go to any dealer to warranty, but now after reading the whole text of their warranty on their website it does say to return to where you bought. it just seems weird to me i guess

i also thought i would add that they say that is their policy for everyone whether you bought it there or not. actually they said it was a 5.00 flat fee charge for warranty when i called later to verify this was right (makes me wonder why i had to pay 6.44). this got me wondering so i did call the place i bought all mine from and they say no charge but you need the receipt. this isn't big for me because i charge everything to my place of work and they say they can find all the records on the computer, but that sounds like a pain in the *** for those who don't know or for tools bought a while back and the receipt is hard to find or non existent. i know now i only have one place i can buy or warranty my gp but that's not a problem because in college i will use my discount to get truck brand impacts and not mess around with the bs in my area.

Their website says:
"IMPORTANT NOTE: We do ask that you purchase any Grey Pneumatic product from an authorized dealer. Any Grey Pneumatic Product purchased from an UNAUTHORIZED dealer is NOT covered under our warranty."

and a quote from their "Unauthorized Dealer Notice":
"Grey Pneumatic is aware of numerous instances in which unauthorized dealers exist, most prevalent are internet re-sellers with no warehouse, storefront or live customer service. These companies are not authorized and generally provide no service after the sale."

Basically they are saying that if you buy it online, then you are out of luck. But then again who's selling those tools to online retailers? Either Grey itself, or the so-called 'authorized distributors" I mean are those 'online' retailers obtaining these tools against the Grey Pneumatic terms and conditions?

Sounds like a double-play to me.. I mean when it comes to selling tools, they let everybody sell them, and apparently do nothing about these "un-authorized" sellers, but when the time comes for warranty, they only honor the authorized dealer's sales...

Normally when there is a pile to step in I find it. I read this warranty while looking for a few socket sets. This just reinforced my idea that Craftsman is not **** nor impressive to you guys, but their tools are excellent (I do not care if you disagree) and I am at a loss as to ever having to do anything else but show up at the store with a broken tool.

SK is also worth the money any day of the week.

I should not have to interview a merchant to find out if he is authorized to sell a tool and be at his mercy years later when I cannot find him for a warranty claim. Why would anyone buy this imported ****? (Aside from it being cheap) If we are not part of the solution we are part of the problem. Stop buying imported tools!!! I do not care what truck they come off of or how hard they wave the flag. Just as there will not be drug dealers on your block if the people on your block do not buy street drugs, there will not be imported tools for sale if nobody buys them.

for you nexum, i did buy from a authorized retailer, i just tried to warranty one at a different authorized place which i would of thought was fine cause they are both dealers, but i guess not and then got charged freight which if i had to replace my socket sets one at a time as they break, i bet i would pay more in shipping than i did originally for them.

also i totally agree with you Michael, until college i will be putting more money into impacts to replace the short and deep half inch stuff i have from gp with craftsman, and then in college will buy some more American made goodness from truck brands.

That's incorrect. They are only saying you can not buy outside their dealer network. If you buy online from an *authorized dealer* (who most likely will have a B&M store if I'm reading GP's website correctly), then you're okay. I just placed an order for a socket set yesterday after checking their website.

I really like my DUO sets in 1/2" Metric and Standard. I just ordered the same in 1/4" so all sizes are covered without buying into the 3/8 drive sets.
