Griding Brushed Concrete Floor

Hello,

A couple years ago I built a pole barn and didn't have any plans on sides so I had slab finished brushed. I'm closing the barn in now and want to put an epoxy down.

Plan was to rent a Walk-behind Concrete Grinder, Dual Head, Electric Powered grinder like you would find at United Rentals or other larger rental stores. (Tried to post a link but I don't have enough post)

1. Will this smooth the brush concrete finish?
2. Will I see the grinder marks after applying the epoxy?
3. Does anyone have any pictures of what a concrete slab looks like after being ground with a grinder like this?

Thanks for the help!

After grinding you want the floor to feel like rough sandpaper, ideally about 80 grit. Google "concrete surface profile" and look at images of the various CSP's. A coating will fill in the grind unless you leave grooves or similar through careless grinding.

If you happen to make some heavy grind marks in the process, a little trick is to go back over it with a diamabrush Tool. Will smooth them out.

Good luck.

First off, what type of floor do you want? Because, if you are doing a full flake broadcast, no grinder marks will show at all. But if you are just going to roll on one thin mil coat of epoxy than every little imperfection will show through.

It all depends on the thickness of the coating and how well you prep the floor whether or not imperfections will show through.

In the event you have swirl marks the way to get rid of them is regained the floor with higher number diamonds since they just pop on the grinders.

For aggressive grinding use #20-40 range, for a more finished look and no swirl marks figure #100 or higher.

As noted above though a full broadcast of flecks will hid any swirl marks. No flecks, or light fleck broadcast can show swirl marks with epoxy or other coatings.
