grinder pedestal 'pipe' question

I picked this up at a garage sale this morning, new in box but missing the 36" steel pipe. Any reason not to use a chunk of black Sch. 40 3" ABS pipe from Lowes? It has an OD of 3.5" which is perfect and it's cheap. Seems heavy duty enough.

If that's not a good option, any recommendations on where can I find a short piece of 3" steel pipe for cheap?

It will be heavy duty, but maybe not heavy enough. Weight is a nice thing to have when you're talking about building a base for something.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that and I could fill the bottom third with cement to put the weight where it needs to be.

That's a Harbor Freight style pedestal. Other importers have sold them as well.

Using a piece of Schedule 40 pipe will be an improvement over the tissue-paper thin piece of tubing that originally came with it.

Edit: oops, now I see you said ABS instead of steel. Well, that's no worse than what it came with.

not sure you want to use a plastic one for the grinder if you are going to push on it at all. can you find a piece of galvanized or cast pipe maybe at a scrap yard or store that sells them and you can cut the length to suit your height and needs?

really rare to just see the new parts without the post. if i remember correctly the stands are only about $30 new. i don't live far from you, but i don't think i have any extra stands left. they pop up on Craigs with the wheels or hunk of steel for bases that will work much better than that stand even if you get a steel post.

Dont use abs. Use steel pipe, either galvanized or black iron.

A piece of 1/4in wall steel pipe for that application will be cheap as chips.

Oddly enough I used a left over section of Lally column welded to a 73 AMC Gremlin rally wheel........really! My Craftsman Block-head grinder has been on this for (35) years.

I think online metal.com has the pipe that would fit. It will cost you bit but abs is not the right material. Try a scrap yard. If they has some solid stock in round, I could be turned down to the exact diameter you need. Just find some one with a lathe.

You need to use steel pipe. 3" SCH 40 ASTM A53 will work fine. Try these folks in your area:

Find someone with an old 10 foot sat dish they want gone. They use this steel pipe. This is how I got the support columns for my hoist project for free. Sold the excess dish components for scrap.

ABS will break. Its not structural at all. Call some local plumbers and see if they have some scrap pipe you can use. Should be free or dirt cheap if they were going to toss it in the scrap pile anyways.
