I just got done trying to prep my brother's garage for epoxying. Scrubbed and powerwashed it twice and etched twice as well. I couldn't get all the grease out. The floor is at least 30 years old. As far as I know the only way to get the rest of the grease out is to grind it out. How much do you think a flooring company would charge just to diamond cup grind a three bay?

For oil stains, try Prosoco's poultice. You may find it at your nearest mason supply house.

As for prepping, a true commercial prep company would charge a minimum of $1500 for the day. Acid wash all you want but in my opinion it's very inconsistent. You are guarantied results with diamond grinding or shot blasting. There is no way a $5 bottle of muriatic acid could replace $25,000 of prep equipment. think about it.

Those were my thoughts as well. I've got a guy coming over to grind it down. Then I know it'll truly be ready for coating. Thanks GG!

Do it yourself. I rented a EDCO grinder from my local tool rental place for $100 for 24 hours.

In my opinion the rentable edco's are complete ****.

Google some local Benny Moores in your area. Some rent what they call an Onfloor grinder, Its basically a Mastercraft 16 inch grinder. Ask to get it with the red diamonds. The others are worthless for epoxy, no matter what they say.

Make sure you rent a vac. Ask for a wand attachment. Pick up all the dust off the floor, then for assurance, run a damp mop to pick up all the dust residue. Concrete dust will cause epoxy not to penetrate and fail.

Good luck

He is charging $800 for a three bay. I have never used a grinder before so I was a bit worried about grinding the floor unevenly and basically screwing up royally.

Thats a decent price. Make sure they edge, chase open your cracks and vac it up clean. I can't stress enough how important it is to ensure all the concrete dust is off the floor. Good Luck!

Believe it or not there were no cracks. They guy who ground the floor was saying it's the first floor he's ever done that's had no cracks in it. He did a great job. He vacuumed, swept and used a blower. I'm going to wet mop it as well.

Ask Fred from AlphaGarage about a prep material that physically eats oil and poops CO2... It's the same stuff used to clean up oil spills.
