I picked up a Calder 22 stone dresser that has some worn/broken parts. After alot of looking, i could not find anything about the company or replacement parts in the proper size. I don't believe the cutters currently in the cutter are correct; The cutter stack width seems very small relative to the dresser opening combined with a fair amount of adjusting washers that did not look correct. I have been looking at the Desmond grinding company website (http://www.desmond-stephan.com/) to see if there is something that looks interchangeable with my dresser but i simply don't know. Any advise for finding proper cutters would be much appreciated!

The measurements off the calder 22 are:
17'' long
2-11/16'' between the inside of the open end legs
2-3/16'' at the smallest distance of the open end (dirt may be making this more narrow then it really is Needs a cleaning!)
2'' current cutter Dia
1-11/16 Current Cutter stack thickness

The shaft the Cutters ride on has broken; i plan to make a new one once i figure out what cutters will work. Pics below I can get better ones if need be.
I plan to use the dresser on my new US electrical Model 20 grinder (hopefully picking up this weekend) 14''x 3'' stones.

Thanks in advance!

Howdy Verg!

A U.S. Electrical tool Model 20? A proper grinder.

For your dresser parts, call Calder in PA.

Failing that, Kut-Rite wheels might fit:

As an aside, those star wheel dressers are, for the most part, obsolete. You might consider using a silicon carbide dressing stick instead. I use them for roughing out surface grinding wheels before profiling with a radius and angle dresser and they remove wheel very fast. They also work well for bringing a wheel into round again, something star dressers aren't very good at.

This calder info look correct? Its the big boy model 20: 5hp 220/440 and the pedestal is drool worthy! I'll post picks when i pick it up over the weekend.

Digressing,
Your 500 rebuild is extremely nice! It inspired me to get the 20!
I have the same books! "THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE IN THEORY AND PRACTICE"
You do some pretty amazing stuff!

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's them.

Good deal! I'd like to see it!

Thanks, it's a work in progress. Maybe I'll get a bit more time to play with it this winter...

Taylor's books are very good. I've read both of them cover-to-cover several times. They answered a lot of questions I had and provided me with a foundation of knowledge.

Here are some photos of the grinder. I forgot to bring my camera when i picked up the grinder so i don't have any good photos still bolted together. Sorta kicking my self for not looking up the price of 14'' dia x 3'' width stones beforehand they cost more then the grinder! Serial number is (looks like) 398259 so might be close year wise to yours.

My cellphone picture of it in the trailer is horrid, and i don't have a picture of the work rests/ rest mount i removed from the pedestal plate. Defiantly going to have alot of questions. Never saw it run (famous last words) but apparently was the only machine they guys tested and ran before pulling it. Once its all cleaned up i am going to try and figure out how to ohm the motor.

The plate is a bit hard to read in the pictures but its:
1800 RPM
220 Volt
3 Phase
60Hz
5 Hp
15 Amps per terminal

On the back of the motor is a wiring diagram plate that is barley visible for 220 and 440 (did not take photo)

I disagree with these dressers being obsolete. I've used Silicon carbide blocks and star wheel and except for specific things (like dressing small wheels where a stone is necessary) everyone I know prefers the star wheel. In fact we don't sell the blocks in the store, only star wheel dressers and replacement parts. I've not had trouble bringing a flat surface back to a stone with a star or cutting it to a shape I need. I will say the block is the only possible for my treadle powered stone, and getting that back trued has been a task still in progress.
I'll try to remember to measure and check the brand of the parts we carry - at least might give you something to go on.

JustMe,

Thanks for the input. The Calder dresser came from the same place as the grinder and they clearly did not do any stone dressing! I feel in the case of truing grinding stones: something is better then nothing, So any input on the replacement cutters you have in your store would be great. I have gotten a little behind on fixing the dresser since i picked up the grinder. Any chance you carry 14'' dia 3'' wide with 1-1/4 arbor or larger stones? the best price i could find online was a little over $200 a stone. 1 and 2 inch width's were a good bit cheaper

Thanks Again

Justme,

Guys who rarely dress their wheels love those things because they hog off a lot of wheel fairly quickly. I've just never been impressed with them. The dressing sticks work more slowly, but offer a better dress than a star wheel. For fast cleanup of hard wheels, I use a diamond, which will rip though a grinding wheel in a hell of a hurry.

Verg,

They definitely ran those wheels down to the nubbins! :lol_hitti

I would probably use something around a Camel A36P5V and an A60M6V on that machine. (Recommendations out of the Camel catalog.) Call your local industrial supplier, they'll be able to get better pricing than the average online retailer will offer. If you need a supplier suggestion, PM me.
