I have a Diablo dual cut and grind wheel that chipped from a skip. Is this wheel still safe to use or should I buy a new one? IMG_20180813_003546.jpg

Probably dangerous, but I would use it. As long as you still have the guard on your grinder, you could probably gently grind it back to flush. Obviously position yourself so it doesn't kill you if it explodes, and a face shield wouldn't hurt..lol

Pitch it. I might be OK and return to round if you use it or it might catch and blow up in your face. You have to decide if the downside risk of having it blow up in your face is worth $5.

How does one live with only one wheel for the grinder? Should be a few spares on the shelf for just this occasion. When in doubt, throw it out. That wheel is like Russian roulette.

It should ring if good, but if you never heard a good one vs a bad one you are pushing your luck. Now bad ones are still usable if you have a pedal or hand crank grinder as the speed is so slow it will not explode, just fall apart.

I'd probably still run it, just be careful knowing it could go. Stand off to the side, grinder guard on, nothing valuable in the fragment path, ect.

That isn't chipped bad, probably will true up after a minute or so of working it.

On the other hand, I am probably too comfortable with grinders, and do more than most would want to. If it makes you nervous, toss it. Wheels are cheap. The fact that you asked tells me you aren't comfortable using it, so just get a new one.

Run it on the edge to smooth it up, grind away. I have used hundreds of 4 1/2 wheels of all brands, never had one blow up. This will fling a few chips till it gets trued, not a problem unlessits got a crack across it.

dr cylde/sberry,

I do have the guard on it (I never take them off for obvious reasons and refuse to use any that don't have one - you can always find another tool, but you can't find another body part or even a life), but I don't want to take a chance on it flying apart and seriously hurting me. For $4 I'll pick up a new one, but it's good to know it wasn't TOO damaged and could be reused if I was tight on money, though I'd still be weary ;-)

When in doubt toss it out

Unless you too like to live dangerously.

When I was a kid I used dad's grinding wheel on aluminum. He wasn't happy. He educated me but didn't spank me.

I will break a buggered or questionable grind stone before I toss it so no one can use it if found.

Love these I’ve never had a problem so use it or do it it will be fine...........anecdotal experiences ........it’s never ever problem until it’s problem !!!!

One in million wheels blow up ( maybe 1in 10 million) .......are you feeling lucky using a damage wheel ? Think if you have to ask “should I use it”......toss it.

Google “cutting wheel injuries” then touch images..........most have been linked for GJ prior. Not a pretty site.

It should ring if good, but if you never heard a good one vs a bad one you are pushing your luck...

With grinding wheels that made from just abrasive grid bound together, you can balance it on a nail and tap it with a hammer, and it should ring like a bell. A cracked wheel (or bell) will not ring.

But the wheel in question is reinforced with oriented fiberglass. It will not ring in any condition.

Run it on the edge to smooth it up, grind away. I have used hundreds of 4 1/2 wheels of all brands, never had one blow up. This will fling a few chips till it gets trued, not a problem unlessits got a crack across it.

I'm in agreement with you. If it doesn't appear cracked, it will most likely fix itself so long as you grind gently on it until the vibration improves.

However, if this were not a fiberglass reinforced wheel, I wouldn't touch it.

I've had a few wheels blow up on me. Its not that rare. You learn to use a grinder with the knowledge that it could blow at any time, and when it does, you don't get hurt.

I'd run it, unless it's cracked. Just be careful, like you always should with any abrasive wheel.

I buy them by the box, and the only time I don't run one is if one won't free-spin flat, if it wobbles and vibrates, I toss it. If it gets a few chips in the side, they are usually just fine to run.

Thought you meant a bench grinder wheel, which it is not. Looks like a cutting disc for a grinder......................I'd use it, if it were mine.

This is just a bity chip out of the edge, very common. If it was that extremely fussy these wouldn't be allowed by law.
As I mention earlier,, cant ever remember it happening. It may have but I cant remember it. I recall dropping and busting 1 or 2 that had to be replaced but not for this kind of edge damage.
