For chop saw disks, I really like the Dewalt red ones. (and I don't usually like dewalt) They're quieter, make less mess, and last longer.

I would NOT go near HF abrasives. There was a post on a forum of a guy that had a grinding disk explode and cut his stomach.

I was at hf once, decided to grab some 14" disk and grinding/cut off wheels. I put it on the chopsaw, fired it up, and it exploded. Luckily, I never stand in line with high rpm things. I put on a second one, that one came up to speed an blew apart, burying itself in sheetrock 15' across the garage. I packaged that **** up right quick and took it all back. $7 a blade is cheaper than a new throat.

[Rant on] Just a safety notice but when ANY power tool like that is spooling up, be it chopsaw, bench grinder, hand grinder, cut off tool, table saw, circular saw, etc., DO NOT STAND INLINE WITH IT!! Stay off to the side. Even when you're using them, do this as much as is humanly possible.

Dad had a table saw blade crack apart on him. It went through 3/8" osb into our furnace room, and farked up the furnace. Seeing the carnage that was done, and the trajectory, if he stood inline with the blade, I would be speaking about him in the past tense. [/Rant Off]

Cut off wheels, Pferd, hands down, I have tried them all, and found them the best.

Flap discs, Walters, Also tried them all.

Both of the above are German made abrasives.

For roloc's, 3M imperials.

I use Norton flap discs and grinding wheels, 3m Rolocs, and HF 3" and 4 1/2" cutoff wheels. Been using the HF wheels for years and years and never had a single problem with one. They last just as long as and cut just the same as Norton's and I can get 10 for what a couple Norton's cost. Believe me I use the heck out of the cutoff wheels too. Probably go through 20 or more a week. I would not use any from HF larger than 4/12" though.

Now THAT is how a company makes an entrance. Wera, pay attention. How about offering 3-4 of them to 4-5 members for testing? It would get a good spread of testing.

Heck, if you were willing to ship one flap disk, one grinding wheel, and one cutting wheel to test, I would pay the shipping. If they're good, you'll have a steady customer. I like a no bs company that will throw their product out for testing rather than flapping their jaws.

In other word, we distibute minimum packs of 25 Cutting Wheels, 25 Grinding Wheels, and 10 Zirconia Flap Discs (with some exceptions for the larger cutting wheels like the 14" Chop Saw blades).

As such we are not really geared up to distribute small mixed sample sets, although I acknowlege that this would be an excellent way to promote our range.

I would be happy to send out 3 separate packs of 25 of our 3", 4", 41/2, or 5" INOX grade Ultrathin Cutting Wheels to those 3 of your members who you as a forum feel would be most qualified to comment on the quality and price.

I would preferably like to send out 3 different sizes to 3 of your members that use them under different conditions - for example cutting stainless steel, car panels, and general mild steel fabrication.

I do quite a bit of automotive metal restoration work, as well as fabricating metal brackets and fixtures, and have tried many different brands of abrasives over the years. Im very interested in this.

Hmm, not a bad offer. Although the Smith & Arrow rep cannot distribute the samples among a wide audience, there is nothing stopping the sample recipients from forwarding a few samples to other board members and colleagues.

Also, what I recommend is that nobody with less than a certain number of posts be eligible to receive one of the bulk sample packages.

I've got to say, the prices look reasonably good for bulk users.

By the way, I cannot seem to find any Smith & Arrow offerings on ebay. Link?

Most of my disks, wheels etc are Dewalt and Hitachi. The Hitachi's grinding wheels came with my grinder and the Dewalt cutoff wheels are all our Lowes sells.

I like bulletindustries they have good prices and really good customer service. Slightly off topic but their prices on impact drill bits are great and for the average user (1-2 times a month) they seem to hold up and drill at least as fast as the expensive hitachi or others.

I can test the 3" but I would much rather test the 4 1/2" since that is what I use pretty much everyday. How about sending me half 3" and half 4 1/2"? That way I can test both.

While I appreciate the offer, and would really like to accept it, I must admit that I am not as experienced in metal fab as many other members here. Could I possibly pass my sample offer to Nissan_Crawler? From reading many of his comments and forum posts, I am confident that he would be able to provide a much better assessment as he better represents the market for these products.

I am a bit curious as to Smith & Arrow in general, such as whether you manufacture these products yourself, and for how long. (Sorry, I tend to ask many questions).

Sure, I can test 3, 4.5 or 5", doesnt' matter to me. 4.5 or 5 would almost be preferrable. If 2-3 other guys want it, I can get some shipped to them, also.

I got an email from a friend who is a professional welder/fabricator with the following info, and he would be a good evaluator as he is not blindly brand loyal and has always to me the good AND the bad to anything I have inquired about and works with these products all day long for profit and not fun.

Grinding Discs:

Flexovit MetalHog 5" x 1/4"

MetalHogs have good stock removal without excess loading. Good on edge for preparing larger "J" grooves.

Tyrolit 5" x 1/8"

The 1/8" discs are a grinding/cutting combination disk that I use on edge for grinding out smaller "J" grooves. Also come in handy for quick stock removal in small areas - lots of bite.

Cutting Discs:

Walter .045" Zipcuts

Good flexibility without blowing out the center and sending the disc flying around the shop. Not prone to chunking out. I get really good life out of the discs - little or no waste.

Flap Wheels:

Flexovit - Zircotex 5" Flapper wheels grit 36

Good overall sanding pad. High stock removal when new. After a while, it becomes more of a polishing disc. Works well on curved or irregular surfaces. Works really well on Aluminum without gouging or leaving divots.

Walter 15-P 503 Cool Cut Sanding Pads Grit 36

My favourite choice for sanding. The secret to these is the backing pads. I use vented medium pads for curved and irregular surfaces, and the vented firm pads for smooth or straight surfaces.

Other consumables:

1 1/2" x 3" Grinding plugs

2" x 3" Grinding plugs

2" Grinding cones & Tapered plugs

Weiler Stringer Bead Knotted wire wheels - 6" to get more use.

- Excellent for flux removal on SMAW or FCAW.
- Good for pre weld prep for GMAW.
- Gets nicely into corners.

Also Tyrolit or Flexovit curved 5" x 1/4" grinding discs. I do not recall specific part numbers but they are dish shaped. Extremely good stock removal when new. Longer life that flat disc of same size.

My negative rant:

I do not like the Walter wire wheels as the main body and center hub are made of dissimiliar metals and the hub always seems to come loose making it a pain to remove.

Extra info you didn't ask for:

Going hand in hand with the consumables, I use Makita Grinders almost exclusively.

In some of the posts I have read here there are some very happy customers currently using and recomending other brands of these products. Thats great. There are some other great brands out there - Pferd, for example, is an exceptional product. By my offer I am not seeking to denigrate other brands - just to introduce our range that we believe are as good as the best on the market and at excellent prices. As a couple of posters here have implied - we are putting our money where our mouth is!

We used the abrasive products from Partsmaster in the shop that I ran. They were pretty high, but they lasted better than anything I could get locally, and didn't shatter. We had ones we bought around town disappear before our eyes as soon as the wheel touched the metal. Anyway, it all depends on if you have a really good distributor. The places where they have great salespeople they do very well. Where they don't...wow are they bad! Anyway, their products were very good quality.

If you feel like some more opinions I am a facilities manager for a 150 bay set of dealerships. I also do a lot of metals fabrication. The guys in the shops use 3 inch air tool cut off wheels and I use 4.5 and 7 inch grinders with wheels disks and flap disks.

Another vote for Walter flap disks. The hubs stay true even after being taken of and reinstalled.

Looks like the USPS was notified of a shipment but nothing was ever brought to the PO or shipped. Checked the other 2 tracking numbers and got the same thing.


I know it was a free sample but this really does not look to good to me. Will sure make me think twice about ordering anything. I was also waiting and putting off working on a project for several days since you told me that you had shipped the pack. Looks like the USPS was notified of a shipment but nothing was ever brought to the PO or shipped. Checked the other 2 tracking numbers and got the same thing.


I know it was a free sample but this really does not look to good to me. Will sure make me think twice about ordering anything. I was also waiting and putting off working on a project for several days since you told me that you had shipped the pack. I could not continue to wait so I purchased some more cutoff wheels locally.........

Hey guys, I ship hundreds of items electronically all the time. If shipping through USPS and you print label over the net that is all that will show up. Once you receive the tiem it normally changes. USPS Tracking is not much good at all...lol

With the holiday I would imagine it slowed things down a little.

I've been buying stuff from McMaster-Carr lately. I've been trying to machine down some really hard edges on cast-iron. It's crazy stuff, some weird mixture of cast-iron that we got from Columbia and we're going through hand-held grinders like crazy. We had some Taiwanese grinders, and switched to a Japanese model at 3x the price. I argued we should've tried an American grinder. But lost out on the vote.

But I have a feeling that we're going to have to CNC all the stuff anyway... And even though we sub-contract that out, it'll probably be less expensive (and quicker) than all the labor we've been putting into things.
