Anyone have any experience with this heater?

http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/rolling+infrared+heater.do?code=EMZACR

I don't have heat in my 3 car garage and was wondering if this was viable for heating a small particular area I would be working in. (such as working on the car motor). I don't use the garage much during the winter (usually 25-40degrees in there). I was thinking this unit might at least let me do some work. The garage ceiling is open through the joists to the ceiling with no insallation. I did get the walls sheetrocked and insulated this fall. I will need to hire someone to do the ceiling this summer.
I do have a propane torpedo heater but unless I stand in front of it it doesn't work do to the heat loss throught the ceiling. Also don't like the smell.

No experience with that particular heater, but I have lots of experience with 1500 watts of electric heat in a garage: pointless.

I've used various combinations including two electric radiant heaters pointing at the vehicle with me under it, fan forced 1500 watt heaters running next to me as I'm working on an engine, etc, and they're all pointless. When it's cold and the space is large, you need much more than 1500 watts of input. I find a radiant electric heater and my Portable Buddy propane heater really only useful to warm my hands from time to time.

I guess this heater might be OK if you're sitting at the workbench doing something for a a prolonged period but it's awfully expensive for what it is.

I'd pass.

That type of heater is not meant to heat your garage............it's for heating a small area so as to work on a body panel...help paint dry.........stuff like that..I have one and use it to speed dry time on paint/primer if the shop is cool........Jim

Agreed. Until you fully insulate your garage, don't waste too much money this year for that unit. If you wan't something just to keep you somewhat comfortable untill then, buy a couple cheap infared quartz heaters at Walmart and keep them close.:shocking:

At a minimum staple some plastic sheeting up to the ceiling, seal it off as much as possible without breaking the bank. You would be surprised what a little plastic can do. If you wanna stay a little warmer, buy a cheap 12x16 tarp and some spring clamps and drape it over your work area then throw a little heater under there. It will stay comfortable enough. I used to work in the driveway like that with neighbors laughing at me. But it worked and I got it done.

The heater will help if you have it next to you and aimed at you. I wouldn't spend that much money on one. You could buy a couple of these and have one on each side of you: //www.walmart.com/ip/Optimus-Infrared-Quartz-Radiant-Heater/15162308
