They are sort of like the WIHA inomics. I asked about special ordering some of those grip ons, but I would have had to get a bunch of them to fill a minimum size order for them. But they are available in the USA if you have a $100 or more wishlist for Grip On tools.

PS: a nice little detail what i like on these german pliers is the extra wide release lever on some 10" versions which is really helpful if the locking plier is very firm on the workpiece , so it`s easier to pull the release lever with less effort.

Here is a recent find on Ebay from a seller named "two-angels" doing business from an EBAY store named "KOMMEN TOOLIQUE".

I "by it now" bought new KNIPEX 10" universal jaw locking pliers for $18.10 each; KNIPEX 10" round jaws locking pliers for $19.60 each; and KNIPEX WELDING locking grips for $29.10 each.

The cheapest prices I had found for these up until last night was from Chad's Toolbox. These pliers are around $10 cheaper PER PLIER than Chad's or anybody else!!!:shocking: They only advertised 2 of each type and I bought all they had listed (6 pair total).

What a great find. They also combined shipping; so all I pay in shipping for the six pliers is less than $10. Tomorrow really is my birthday - looks like I found this deal just in time:pimpflash.

I am not sure if they will have more, but you can search to find out their contact info and email them. Below is a copy of my invoice

Knipex 4114250 Adjustable Locking Pliers Universal Jaws 2 $18.10 $36.20
Knipex 4104250 Adjustable Locking Pliers Round Jaws 2 $19.60 $39.20
Knipex 4214280 Welding Grip Adjustable Locking Pliers 2 $29.10 $58.20
Subtotal: $133.60
Shipping and handling via US Postal Service Priority Mail: $9.90
Total: $143.50

My first "Self-Grips" 1965 were by MOLE . They were OK in sizes about 7" & 10" , worked well & the plating was a matt finish that stayed on. They did (still have it somewhere) - abt. 5" bright chrome on copper that peeled , floppy & useless. Approx. 1975 I purchesed some made by Gedore , blue hammered finish , bit clumpy but hard wearing. Then I was advised to use Pederson Vice-Grips , the last larger sizes I purchased abt. 1995 cost £14 + VAT which would have been 15%. The years go by and due for replacements - only to find they are made in China

------

So - I log in here and it seems I need to investigate availability of Spanish "Grip-On" , I don't wish to pay a Snap-On premium ;)

Of late - I find ones branded by Wurth (IIRC a Italian firm) , identical to more expensive Facom branded !
----------------

http://www.smc-ltd.co.uk/
Then I find this firm's self adjusting pliers are the same as Facom & Wurth and the prices are cheaper to. Can't be too bad if Facom supply :dunno:

SMC seems to be a USA firm originally ?

Possibly they are made in Taiwan or China , having obtained a 7" Needle-Nose (Snipe) with wire cutter to evaluate ;)

I am interested - does anybody know anything about this company SMC ?

regards and thanks in advance

SMC seems to be an importer of novelty products.

The SMC self adjusting locking pliers which are also available from Wurth, Hazet, Beta, Facom etc. come from this company: http://www.lockjawpliers.com/
and are from China or Taiwan.

The other SMC locking pliers are standard China/Taiwan import maybe from this company: www.mightyjaw.com

Looking at some of the other products , yes - I think the word novelty is a good description . I think I will obtain a larger size curved jaw wrench to evaluate , I doubt they will be as good as a genuine USA pederson Vice-Grip. .
It does seem as if I need to source Grip-On in the UK , can't say I have noticed them - but they may be lurking under other names.

There's another importer in Canada that carries those self-locking pliers, locking nut driver, and pocket wrenches--all packaged similarly under the same brand.

Since you're in the UK maybe you can source for Signet or Bahco tools which carries locking pliers made by Grip-On.

Thanks - I will have a search under the Bahco brand. I have a few Signet tools purchased off eBay , Signet - AFAIK they are sold off the vans as a 2nd Line , possibly on the QT so as not to breach franchise.

Monte , as a late-comer to this Forum , I am only up to page 70 of your long running "old country" tools thread and that is speed-reading. Will contribute a few photographs of some that will / may be new to you Tipco , Britool, Gordon etc. for chrome . I tended to buy Williams Superslim or Snail Brand for blackadized finish. I probably have quite a few going back to 1965 when I started as a apprentice , many in first class condition still. I am a bit of a tool collector with more than one workshop so you may have to wait a while for some. From early 1970's - I tended to pay through the throat for quality, in the main Snap-On & Proto + Stahlwille of course , the odd Belzer & Elora "Classic" ratchets , socket sets, often used sockets , extra extensions etc. - so nothing new to most on this forum .

that sounds good !! Most tools in the thread are rather new so some pics of old ones would be very interesting !!
