The release lever works in the opposite direction of a vice grip lever, making it much easier to release them, regardless of how tight they are.

Is there any substantial functional difference between the nickel plated version and the enamel one? I think I might actually go for the enamel ones via Snap-On (if they have the ones I want) rather than from Amazon. Grip-Ons aren't too readily available in the US, are they?..
I think the real Grip-On needs to have their legal people do something. I could be wrong but I highly doubt the Grip-On tools in this search are the same as the company that makes the locking pliers.

Youre right, thats the chinese company that is sold at northern tool and simlilar places I believe

Where are they made? Spain ?
I won't buy Irwin branded vise-grips anymore and am looking at an alternative.
The snap on and BP ones are grip ons.
The jaws teeth are sharper, and seem to hold better, and all of the various c-clamp and other specialty ones are much better than the vice grip equivalents.
dxdexter - those are some decent prices! There are a few other things in the catalog that look good too. Too bad Gray doesn't ship here. (Or do they...?)
I took a wee bit too long to edit my post there. It looks like those distributors are all local places, especially since not all states and very few cities are listed.US distributors listed here. I don't know if they stock tools or can just order them.
I love my Grip-on pliers (relabelled as Snap-on). I have them in my main work box and my (USA made) Vise Grips are relegated to my pile of duplicate pliers, mainly to be used for welding projects:

which can be found here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23482&highlight=grip-onWorked out to $54.40cdn for the set. Now I just have to see which colour they come in. Those who have them, are they light grey or black/charcoal?
I also know for a fact that the 'Knipex' locking pliers were made by Grip-on.
How do you know? The Knipex ones are of very different construction, and are marked "made in germany", Grip-on is made in Spain.
I wonder if my Knipex "vise grips" are made by Grip On. The knipex's open by pushing the extended lever the opposite of regular vise grips. Heres some pics. The last pic shows the orange lever in what would be the disengaged position.

I'm still envious that you guys up north can buy those ergo-grips and we cannot. =P
Yep, it's because Irwin gradually took the tool line from "made in USA" to "made in USA with domestic and global components" and then BAM they closed the Dewitt factory and shifted all production overseas.STUEY,
If you don't mind my askin, what is the aversion to Vise GRip brand pliers? Is because the Irwins are not made in USA? Or is there some other reason?
I have bought Knipex locking pliers exclusively. I also try to buy absolutely no tools made in China and refrain from buying Tawainese if I can get the product from another country (even though some of the stuff seems pretty well made).
I buy the Knipex from Chad's Toolbox, but the variety of shapes and sizes offered by Knipex is limited.
