Any good? Not looking for "professional grade" or commercial use, just a good drill press for my home shop. Anyone have a Grizzly drill press?

We have a smaller one at work. It is a decent Dpress (china), been used for several years by stay in school and grad students who work it pretty hard. While youe at it pick up one of those matching grizzly green tool boxes

I have a drill mill and lathe from Grizzly. I would not be afraid of buying a drill press or any other similar tools.

Grizzly does have mainland and Taiwan tools. I think the Taiwan tools are better.

Grizzly has the same range of tools that most do.

The cheap **** is, well, cheap ****.

They do have some quality tools.

Sometimes the 'Fit and finish' isn't great, but everything I used did what it should.

I've used a Grizzly lathe, planer, jointer, and tablesaw.

I still own a large buffer/grinder.

Look for the items labeled ISO 9001 factory.

About the only thing I can say for Grizz is.........and this is what separates them from other ripoff chinkenese joints is:

They offer different levels of quality in most of their offerings.Up to entry level pro stuff....so your pocket book makes the decision on quality. When I hear folks bashing Grizz quality...you have to ask which model they're refering to?

We have some of their higher end stuff("Z" series)...its been well worth the price.Don't have any of their cheaper HF type equip.

Internet bashing of them seems to keep their used prices lower.......good!50 cents on the dollar is avg price for equip in new/excellent condition. One bigazz shaper,we got for .35...still in cosmoline! So,don't buy "green" if resale is on the menu.Buy it...use it...make money....rinse/lather/repeat.

I have their 15" planer, I don' t know if itstheir better oneor not. The table height ajusting gears and chain parts are junk. imo I'd find a good used Rockwell or powermatic made in the usa by Americans.

I have a buddy who is into woodworking and he has several Grizzly tools including a thickness planer, joiner planer, and a spindle sander. I used them quite a bit and have been very impressed with them! You may want to also consider JET they make some decent equipment and are comparably priced. Good luck!

decent lines for moderate work. Depends on your budget and expectation of use. I don't personaly wn any, but have friends who moderately use them with good results.

i dont know what everybody comparing grizzly to. But grizzly make some good tools. i mean there are up there on the ladder not just cheap stuff. My drill press is HF and there is nothing wrong with it. its been running great twenty years but grizzly is way better in quality and performance than mine.

I would not think twice about buying one, its like the bendpak/ mohawk deal. why bother thinking just buy

I bought a Grizzly belt/disk sander and I hate it. The belt adjustment ***** and I had to replace the disk 3 times before I got one to run true. I think the only reason the last one worked was because they re-machined it b4 they sent it to me. I also got a 4' box/pan brake and a 52' stomp shear on a buy-out deal and was not happy with those either. The shear could not be adjusted to shear well and the brake was clunky. I replaced the brake with a used Tennsmith and the shear with a Pexto. I still have the sander but it roars when its running. I expect it to go south sometime soon and I will replace it with this: Sander I personally will not buy another Grizzly tool.

I myself would hold out for a good used USA model. Drill presses are one thing that sit languishing in a lot of older peoples shops. The prices have come down over the last 15 years due to owners dying.

My ex father in-law bought a new grizzly cabinet saw and it was a POS.

You will never “wish I could have found an old USA model” if you actually wait and find one.

That being said, I find Taiwan machinery to be leaps and bounds better than china ****.

Thanks for all of the replies, I think I will hold out and look for some older used clausing stuff.

I have a clausing variable speed drill press at work (working in heavy maunufacturing has made me realize the value of quality tools) I also really like the variable speed. The hunt is on, I will post pics and let ya know what I find.

Check out this company http://www.tools-plus.com/ Absolute great people to deal with. They are the ones that I purchased my lathe from. They're also running deals with free shipping on anything over $99 for Christmas. I highly recommend them.

I had a cordless Grizzly 1/2" drill, it was ****. The charger was terrible, the battery was terrible, the build quality was terrible, and it broke with light use in a month.

I also have a Grizzly small mill that is pretty decent. The mini mills and lathes are all the same from the different companies for the most part, and with a little tweaking here and there they are perfectly acceptable.

In other words, just like with every other company there are good and bad things from them.

I looked at their drill presses on line, but I'm really the type of person that likes to see something in person before I buy it.

I wound up with a Wilton of Chinese manufacture, but the fit and finish and function seem to be pretty good.

I also have a Grizzly belt/disk sander that has been good. The finish on some of the parts is just a little lacking, but not in any areas that affect function. I have a friend that bought one before me and was able to see his before I got mine.

It would have been nice to have old US made versions, but I don't see that much come up where I am and when it does the prices aren't very reasonable.

I would guess their drill presses would be better than Harbor Freight and Northern and probably close to the same as Wilton/Jet imported stuff.

Tools-Plus has been around since the early 80's. They are a brick and mortar store in Waterbury, CT. I have watched them grow from a small store to a much larger store with a huge online presence. My dad used to take me when he needed some S-K stuff warrantied and any power tool supplies. Much better than going to Home Depot. You are dealing with real people when you order from them.

I have a transmission jack, paint guns and a hand crank hose reel.

Decent stuff no issues, but like anywhere (HF, Northern, ete..), watch what you buy. Grizzly stuff seems better then your avreage import stuff overall.

In the near future I'm going to pick up one of their drill presses.
