The instructions and internet say a portable generator should be grounded. How deep does the grounding rod have to be for a portable generator and where can I get one that isn't 8 feet long? The generator is a 5250 Porter Cable.

Instructions from the generator say to pound a rod?

youre not gonna find a rod shorter than 8' unless you cut it yourself since 8' is what the NEC requires.

Primary purpose of electrodes is for lightning suppression.

I wouldnt worry about it.

How are you gonna be using this generator? To power a house or something temporary?

If you connect it with a 4 conductor cord it will share the ground with the building. I can only assume your building already has a uffer and grounding conductors.
