close is OK ~1'

it depends on the quality of the ground (soil, etc.)
I usually drive 2 at distance apart ~the length of the rod and connect them with bare #4 at 18" D
it may be code to drive 2 rods now, I don't have the NEC with me

How far away from the buried conduit showed I stay ? and thanks for the tips so far.

far enough to miss it, and not disturb the rod if you have to dig it up...
>3 ft should be good..although I don't think there is a specific code requirement

Wire from the rods needs to be continuous, un-interrupted, no splices, attached to the rods using approved clamps or exothermic welding. I seem to recall the code requires the top of the rod and clamps be buried, but I'm too lazy to look it up and could be wrong.

I don't know what the NEC says either.
However,
A buddy of mine put a service on his garage about 6 years ago. Inspector came and said his job was great except that he drove the ground rod so just the clamp was above the ground, it was a nice and clean install.
Inspector said that the top of the rod has a manufactuer stamp embossed on the metal close to the top. He wanted the rod to out of the ground far enough to see the stamp to prove that the rod was not only driven partway and then the top cut off.
My buddy shoveled a scoop of dirt, inspector saw stamp and he gave it a pass stamp.

Need to place my ground rod at my barn. How far from the floor/wall should it be and do I only need one rod ??

First let me state loud and clear I AM NOT ANY ELECTRICAL EXPERT! OK, now that I have shared that I will share that I used to live at an old farm out in the country and I seem to recall the Lightening rods attached to the ridge of the old barn as being attached to ground rods that were located at all four corners of the barn, which did not strike me as a bad idea, but perhaps I am all wrong here. Also, I have not a clue what code says regarding the matter, though I could look it up at work.

The mention above of lighting rods and codes.
I know that lightning protection is not covered in the NEC. Which is NFPA code 70
Lightning protection is NFPA code 780.

Lightning rods have went kind of by the wayside except for specialized applications. I can only speculate but I think much to do with different types of roofing and now grounded footings, footings with re-steel in them. Back in the day rods were often on highest structures, barns with steel roofing and wooden framing, mostly to dissipate static buildup, less an attractant for strikes.

Same deal here, but after inspector passed it I pounded them down another foot or so. About broke my toes on one of them while walking around the house one night.

Had I been able to I would have pulled it out of the ground and threw that thing in the woods the night I did that. I couldn't walk normal for a good week.

The one I drove for the shop is just outside the overhead door and off to the side a bit and as close to the outer wall as I could get with a sledge. Pounded a hole in the concrete there, drove the rod below level, tied it in, packed in some gravel then put about 2" of patch over it. No hangee toeee cussee hazard - if it's out, I'll hang up on it, whatever it is - giant red flags, orange cones, etc don't help. :)
