This forum could use a little more work on this issue with a little less confusion, the ground pin thread was a classic example, got so confusing I gave up reading.
The diy types tend to over kill wiring size in many cases and to be sure there are other code violations but as much as we try it still needs work on the forums,,, keeping it simple as can be.
I ran across a case the other day where a guy made some home brew switch, cord into a handi box cord out, plugs on the ends. I generally keep eye of caution on these types of things and I got a poke from one, must have grabbed the box and leaned against the machine frame. I tore 2 of these apart, one had a wire ran from one working pin of a 3 way switch to the handi box, the one I got zapped from had a wire running from the ground terminal of the switch to the box, the green was wire nutted and passed thru, hence, box not grounded and a poor job of terminating the hot wire left a thread of wire shorting to the box, when I got shock I figured something was up, fixed the devices, changed switch, etc, colors were all mixed up, one had used green for the grounded conductor, etc.
For giggles I pull off the panel cover, 3 wire feed coming from the service main at the house, lots of whites and grounds landed under the same screws and had NO bond screw or strap to the can.
This was all done way back, would have been code legal besides that a phone line had been added later, was done by a guy that had license in his pocket to boot,, who needed some refreshers at minimum, prolly got his papers before they come up with grounded circuits, ha. The change to 4 wire panel feeds,,, or service to separate buildings is a great thing, Eliminates a lot of guess work, just land the grounds and whites where the rest of them are, almost cant miss,,, good idea for the diy crowd and some of these with the old papers stuck in their boot somewhere.
Using the word "common" might be a better term than neutral for grounded conductors in many cases too.
