Dan it would struggle to get to 4 or 5 C here as I am only about a mile from the coast. Just a few brisk mornings here and there. As soon as you go up the escarpment and head inland a bit winter may nip down to about -2 or -3 C.

So pretty mild compared to some of the guys here.

That's pretty mild. I live at the coast also and it's usually 10*F warmer than inland in the winter. But we still get days that it has got to -20* F. Not very often, but it does happen. This was a very mild winter for us. We only had 4 snow storms and I think the coldest, it was about -10* F. But we get weeks that it never gets above 32* F. Of course in the summer months, we rarely see 90* F days. They call 3 days in a row over 90* F a heat wave here.:lol_hitti

GB: so you live on a lake AND get fresh eggs from the hens daily? sounds like HEAVEN to me. well done on the roof and chicken coop. it's amazing to see the materials used and creativity from guys all over the world.

we use a lot of wood here for fencing and I see a lot of metal fencing in Australia maybe because wood is expensive or not easily found.

cheers and hope you are having a great weekend.

thanks for working with my SLOOOOOOOW method of getting a good joke.

Brooder Box...

Knocked up this little brooder box over the long weekend which beats the plastic tub for the young chickas.

Used 2 small pallets that I picked up from work, some more of the corrugated sheet left from the chicken coop roof and a small bit of mesh that I picked up from Dad's collection on Sunday, and some offcuts of 3" and 4" x2"'s ripped into inch and a bit widths.

Blurry......sure they are not getting cooked by that heat lap. Sorry, bad taste joke. I wonder if that's how they got the name..."Red Rooster".
Seriously, a good project for the weekend, well done.

Thanks Drives, I'm about a mile from the beach which is the Pacific Ocean. Our chooks are moulting at the moment so they have stopped laying for a short time. It is pretty rare that we would have to buy eggs.

Timber fencing is not necessarily more expensive, it's just that termites love to chew away on them so they don't last. Treated timber fences that I've seen in any new developments around the place all seem to be warped, buckled etc after no more than a couple of years.

However it all depends on where you are and what your fancy is at the end of the day.

Do worry about jokes, I'm normally the last one to catch on myself

Ha good one. Thanks. There is one 'Red' rooster. Already getting his tail feathers and crown.

I have had the fluke meter in there monitoring the temps quite regularly since we got them. It's a nice 25-26 degrees currently. Hopefully another week and a bit and I can kill the heat.

Welding course week 8

Tonight we played with oxy-acetlene cutting.

Man wish I'd gotten on to this earlier would have saved a stack of cutting discs on the grinder. I grew up doing oxy soldering (I'm a plumbers son) but have never used it for cutting myself before.

Cuts like butter.

So just did some free hand playing to start with, then had a go with the wheel attachment and also a strip of angle iron to cut mitres and to use as a guide. Finally a quick play with the gouging attachments.

Very cool. Don't do it in thongs (flip flops)

GB, that's a slick idea for a gutter.

Thanks, I had marked out to cut a section of about 1" on the circumference but after doing the first cut it becomes very flexible so I just slipped it over and pre drilled some holes then tek screwed it through.

Was perfect timing too as it flogged it down rain that night.

GB: thanks for all the welding pictures. funny you mention the camera pictures not clear because I think mine are getting fuzzy too. maybe because we are members of GJ and we pull out the phone to take pictures when we are working and not the cleanest situations.

keep up the great welding and i'm sure it will come in handy. one of our members Jon Jacobs who lives in Canada has a couple trailer builds and he has some serious skills if you might want to take a look at his welds and work over in the fabrication section. here's his last thread and look for a few of his other ones if you have time.

there are so many talented guys that are members here and i'm hoping to be one of them one day in the future before I leave this world.

Neither would be a good idea. :lol_hitti

I personally prefer not to use torches to cut metal. There are times though, it is the only way to go. Cut-off wheels are my "go to" choice. Less chance of having to use a fire extinguisher.:willy_nil

Drives, I'll be sure to check out those links thanks. I'm currently nearly-sorta-almost half way through Thomas's vintage garage thread and as such I haven't ventured anywhere else apart from my subscribed list for a while.

That is all I use too, the thin discs. Through thin plate not such a big deal just on the thicker stuff it takes longer and chews through a few discs.

GB, Well done on the chook house and the Oxy cutting.

Thanks 1/2 Cup :)

It is indeed, nice work GB.

Thanks BB :)

Back in post #187 I used up what was left of a steel plate to make the tops for my portable benches. Here is where the rest of that plate went. It became a fire pit that my brother made and here it is in action on Saturday.

The pit is around 3' x 3' square. The pork (which was only one of several roast meats) was very tasty.

Hey mate, nice work on the chook coops. And that pork looks great too!

We drove past your way on Sunday, did the loop down through Kangaroo Valley and back up the coast to Sydney. Some nice cars out and about too!

Very nice fire pit GB. And now I'm hankering for some slow roasted pork roast. Thanks a lot.

You should incorporate a gear driven spit rotator on that pit.:D

Indeed my brother is a bit of an aficionado with the spits and smoking. I should have taken a photo of the smoker he had next to that fire pit made from 44 galon drums, he smoked 2 chickens on it for the occasion too (which happened to by my SIL's 40th).

Hewey I'm actually heading to Kangaroo Valley camping this week for a couple of nights with the kids and a mate and his boys - school holidays so a bit of a dad's and kids trip leave the wives at home

Dan I'll plant the seed for the gear drive idea next time I see him

Helped my Dad out today.

Took my table saw up and we ripped down some old cedar doors that he had rescued from out in the weather. After trimming them down on the table saw we put them through the thicknesser, the grain came out beautifully - considering much of it was painted in gloss black paint.

He will be making blanket boxes and toy boxes with it.

Love this saw. Only used it a few times for myself so far but gave it a good workout today. We hooked up Dad's 2HP dust extractor to it to try out and it worked a treat so now I'm in the market for a dust extractor. I think a 1HP unit should do for me and they can be had for <$200 at Gasweld or Carbatec from looking at the brochures we had on hand today.

When we were packing up I was handed some goodies. A bosch 100mm grinder that a neighbour had given dad when they moved out of the area. Works fine just needs a clean up. So it will marry up nicely with the pile of 100mm discs that my neighbour gave me over the fence a couple of years ago

Thanks 1/2, agreed one is not enough. I know my dad certainly didn't need anymore grinders.

No photos yet of promised wall of Bosch :( Since you are at work this week I'll let it go to the weekend - but wait you are going away again are you not ?

Anyway I need to track down a grinder blade removal spanner/widget for this 4" one, the 5" ones are too big.

Catching up from last Sunday...

First job was to finish a new nesting box lid on the chicken coop that I replaced the roof on the other weekend...

View media item 59703
Then get the accumulator connected up under the camper trailer so we could go away for a couple of days...(that clear hose will be redone later - forgot to get out the blue hose from in the camper before I'd packed and closed it up!)

Then clean up this mess a bit...

I'd have a couple of spare ones kicking about, send a PM if you want one - I guess you've already figured that a pair of needle-nose pliers and a small screw driver do the job until you get the correct tool.

Are you sure your not an Aussie Dan? :dunno:

Mark I think Dan must be an Aussie on a tourist visa in the states by the sounds of it.

Just doing my best to try and understand what the hell you blokes are saying at times. I'm trying NOT to be a freckle head.

GB, the needle nose must be doing the job for you. Although a spanner would make it easier I'm sure.

Dan, Lyndon, 1/2 Cup, BB, & Hewey, thanks for keeping tabs and as always much appreciated to have everyone stopping by.

Agreed Dan is going very well with the lingo  probably better than some locals I would suggest.

Have not had a chance yet to clean up that little grinder but will see what the weekend brings - thanks for the spanner offer BB I'll let you know if I come up short.

So fellas, here is the revised pic as of tonight with the draw closed

In all seriousness since joining GJ this is a "far" more efficient place than it was and to get it this far has taken some work. Biggest improvement was getting a handle on all the containers of screws and fasteners and staying on top of that. It is a major time saver having everything in it's place. After I took the pic it took about 2 mins to get a stack of tools and fasteners out I need to use tomorrow at my Brothers place.

There is still some clutter behind me when taking this pic of stuff that needs mostly to go to the charity shop, but otherwise slowly getting there. Spent this week off with the kids for school holidays so not a lot of garage projects worked on.

Some time ago a boilermaker mate of mine put me onto these permanent markers. Milwaukee INKZALL. They work in wet, rust and all the places that most markers seem to let us down. So far I am very happy with them and this one has been through the wash at least twice.

One I gave to my Dad is still going strong (and he would use it more than me) and another I gave to another mate who is a radiologist, and he said that he wrote on someone with it for an x-ray and the mark was still there a week or more later when the person came back for a follow up x-ray. I thought that was funny...

Anyway I got these on the counter at Gasweld. They were in packs of 4 for about $8.
