It's made a cameo appearance in the background of quite a few photos in my thread if you look closely.

It's always the first thing that he grabs when we head to the garage or the backyard.

I've been trying to teach him to look after his tools, and always put them away when he's done. He's not doing too badly, but they are looking a bit worse for wear...

That orange para cord on the tape measure is a repair job. I think he broke the rubber ******** the first day he had it.

Bit storage looks great. I've been looking for something and I think you've got it!

Is the PVC pipe just in the drawer by gravity? Does it try to roll when you grab something?

And one last question: do the bits try to jump slot if you happen to close the drawer too fast?

Thanks Andy. Yes they are just sitting in by gravity. If you cut nice and tight for length then they won't move - especially once they have some weight in them. I do plan on a small support brace with some aluminium angle front and back for extra stability - will post a pic when I do.

They don't roll - I took that photo from the side last night, here is one standing in front. The drawer slides are pretty sturdy so don't roll too freely. Maybe they will free up some after a bit of use

So they won't jump slot hope the pic clears it up ? A gentle close without getting carried away should minimise the forward inertial tendency.

GB, The drawers came out nice and your drill storage idea is well done. Adding the foam and labels really improves the original idea. Now you got me thinking about using a drawer for this. For years I've always had many home made drill indexes sitting on top of the bench. Many times just a wood block with drilled holes and the bits sticking up. Never liked it really so it's time for a better way and I think you found it.

Thanks RM. Seems the sticky surface area for labels doesn't like sticking to air bubbles in foam - will need to adhere them with some chemical influcence it seems.

GB, are you headed down this way at all?, I have bits starting at 2" and down to 1mm that need sorting.
BTW, I use a digital Vernier to check the bits because I can't read the imprint any more.

Sounds like a few mugs of tea one day at your place then - actually it was an enjoyable job sorting drill bits over an evening or two with the required pondering beverages

Hey GB, I finally caught up on your thread - great work on the insulated garage door, the cabinets, the Kaizen foam (I'm gonna have to get me some of that one day), the drawers, the drill bit storage, the ice-cream container shelves and anything else that may have slipped my mind.

Oh, and as for the (free) work bench - I think the customary "YOU ****" is most appropriate.

Ha, Mark thanks. I get a bit frustrated as I only have short time slots for QST but since you write it that way I seem to have got a little bit done.

I have trouble with that too Terrick, most of my drill bits aren't etched deep enough for this to work - but on my taps and dies I filled the size markings with white paint pen, then wiped/sanded the surrounding area.

Luckily my tap and die collection is in a basic kit - it hasn't grown. Yet.

Well I came down to the garage tonight and went to my drawers (the drill bit one - and I do this amost evey time I come in here now) and thought these are cool, I want some more

So immediately above the ones I just made is the gap where the microwave oven used to sit in the old kitchen. Got out the measuring stick and worked out that if I remove the small bench top there I can fit another 5 of the shallow drawers in. That will give me 12 of these size drawers altogether. The top one will be just below shoulder height so still ok to reach into. Probably a good spot to move the chisel draw upto from where it is now.

Also just attached these decals that I picked up from Matt over at the obsessed garage a few weeks back.

The buckets are 12 litres (a bit over 3 gal) that I grabbed from the green big box store, normally I would have grabbed the 20 litre (5 gal) ones but they are way too big for the kids.

My method of attachment (please chime in if you have any tips on doing this)
- line it where it's to go and tape off a side.

- carefully peel the backing off, and roll the decal back on from the taped off edge

I've had a look at my spares stock, and don't have any small enough, so will get some tomorrow (too hot today, so I'm hiding inside watching the Bathurst 12 Hour, and it's a corker of a race too.... The Safety Car is coming 3rd I think ).

Ok my internal diameters in the draw are 570 long by 500 wide. Can you post up a pic of your bits ?, can you spare 2 draws ? I'm going to make one of the next draws a draw for imperial stuff I've decided.

And how did you cut it in half?

I used the table saw with a bit of timber clamped to the side so that the pipe could slide between it and the fence. Makes a damn fine mess though that took longer to clean up than to do the cutting.

Also Lyndon do you have full extension on the draw or pretty close to ?

You should end up with 13 full rows going from your measurements. And I'll guess you will get 3 bit sizes to a row (at least the stuff longer than about a 4mm bit).

How deep is the draw, deep enough to to make a shallow & narrow tray to slide on top ? Just to store small bits - can probably knock up some thing in MDF with a groove bit in the router. Will show you what I mean when I get 5 to do mine.

Perhaps I'm overthinking it now.

You don't have to worry, although I have some decent detailing gear and supplies now, I still am struggling to make the time to actually get to the doing part

Just watch the automatic car washes for scratching and swirl marks in the paint on the Tacoma. Just my 2 cents

Drives, although PVC is not new as a storage widget, in all my recent internet and GJ trolling (and I did a lot) I have not seen any pics of it used for drill bits in this way. What took me ages to settle on is a storage solution that had a curve to the base so that you can pickup the smaller bits with your fingers - do you know what I mean ? If you have a square flat base then a bit can get right into an edge an you can't pick it up.

Some of the gear that goes with the Lista/Vidmar type cabinets look good but they would be all premium $$$. I did email a company over here that do similar cabinets out of curiosity but never got a response.

There are lots of home made ideas out there that can work, but they are for drawers that are only holding 1 bit of each size, so not helpful to my problem (and I suspect most of us here).

The small sliding draw that will go on top will house "speed bores", I think you might call them "spade bits" ?

Last few nights I've been trying to work out my screwdriver draw. Originally only allocated 1 for the purpose, but then I went and treated myself to some new screwdrivers and well now that 1 draw allocation just got bumped to 2. Lucky I'm about to make some more draws.

This is about the 3rd iteration of layout on this one. Have mucked around with and without kaizen foam. Who can spot the mistake ?

Not sure if this draw will stay this way, Kaizen foam is nice, but it's not the best when you want to get stuff real close together.

GB, I really like the PVC drill organizers. I may find an empty drawer to set that up in. My problem (OK, maybe it's a bonus?) is having tools in the garage as well as in the workshop 100 feet away. The organizer I use most for the hex bits is a little magnetic tray. The magnet holds the tray to a steel surface and also holds the bits in the tray. I am sure lots of places sell them but the last one I bought was made by Torin: Torin 581T Magna Caddy Hex Bit Organizer. I even have one mounted on the side of a toolbox, right next to the man door in the garage.

I have 2 of the blue versions of those bit holders you are talking about. I got them when Amazon did ship them to Australia (I thought I had a photo of them, but I've just taken an hour to look through all 750 photos of mine on here, and I haven't - so I'll take one this arvo). Then, when I did want to get some more, they had changed the policy. And the ones on E-Flay are really over the top $ wise. But recently I had a friend tell me how to get around that. And I've set it up but haven't used it yet (waiting for some free $). Use "shipito.com", they set up an address in the states for you, and then re-ship it to Australia for you. If you take the paid option, they'll combine packages into one, photograph it arriving and departing the place, and it's all quite reasonable. They'll also setup an address in Europe if needs be.

Even taken that idea of the pvc and making them fit small drawer organizer would be helpful too. I find sometimes pre made items just don't fit so sometimes taking the idea and custom making your own version to fit you needs works the best. I made simple organizers from piece of wood and finish nails.

At the moment I'm going back with my original copper lines plan as I already have the copper and several of the fittings. The rapid air kit will ship to AU from amazon for very good prices and if I hadn't already had components ready then I would have certainly pulled the trigger. Just need to get a bit of QST and a hand from my dad to solder up the copper.

I have heaps of saddles and other bits. Happy to send stuff your way as long as it doesn't cost me anything +1 for polishing the copper and clear coating it.

Niels, I guess I will have to bow to peer pressure in this instance. They might look ok clocked if I can pull off a clone of Andy's stand off brackets on the copper.

Thanks Ken, I'm going to use 1/2" since I already have it - it's not going to be a complicated system. Only need to grab a couple more brass tee's and wing connectors. The 1/2" to 1/4" misc reducers I've ordered online.

All,

Wifie and kids had a few things on this morning so I got into it early before it got too hot.

First shirt saw lawns and edges done.

Second shirt got the 295000k oil change and 5 wheel rotation done on the Hilux. Even tried out the new wash bucket and decal.

Also out of the second shirt I got the rest of the faces cut for the draws.

Later on and into the third shirt, I used up what I had left of the iron on edging and got them roughly mounted. Will have to pickup some more edging, get that on and do a final adjustment before I can install the handles.

They are slowly getting there Terrick, worked out why I was not getting consistent gapping now (a couple of pine lengths were slightly wider than the others), so hopefully a couple of cuts tomorrow will sort that. I have just finished getting the first handle installed on the ones with their final front alignment so hopefully tomorrow night phase 1 can be started to be wrapped up

I’ve been keeping an eye out lately for a Stanley tape measure that was imperial since I’ve been doing more and more measuring in the old scale since being on GJ (I actually made both of the twin benches a while back totally in imperial).

Anyway this Stanley power lock 2, 8m/26’ popped up on the bay of fleas the other day so I happened to jump on it.

It now sits beside it’s metric partner in crime in the pre-determined spot in the measuring draw. I'm going to make an insert drawer for this one that will hold the vernier calipers etc.

They are also sequence part numbers. 33-636 & 33-637. Not very exciting I know - it’s a dang measuring tape.

In great condition, looks like it’s been used for about 5 mins and will probably be my main goto tape now. The black fatmax is a great tape but more suited to framing and building applications IMO.

They are about a year apart in manufacture, one being USA made and the other I presume under license perhaps.
