Thanks for giving me a giggle this morning Bob, luckily in-between coffee sips.

Well tonight drawers phase 1 is complete. Cut a couple of panels for the 3 top faces today to fix the gapping issue (snuck home at lunch time for an hour), then installed all the handles tonight.

Happy now - that was more fiddly than I had planned so the next phases should go somewhat faster :dunno:

Interestingly, I don't want a metric tape, or even a half and half. I'm always trying to measure with the wrong side. In a pinch the digital electronic dial calipers do nicely set to mm. Seems I don't need to measure in metric over 6" long. But it sure is handy to measure, then switch to metric to see if the poor souls used an archaic system to produce the part I'm working with.

Those look great GB. ( Nothing less than we've come to expect from you.)

Thanks for the kind words Dan. Much appreciated.

Lol Andy, sometimes things are just on the wrong side.

GB, top job..

Thanks Mr 1/2 Cup.

Thanks Gerard, I'm looking forward to what you come up with now that you have a bit extra space with the WoC moved out.

Great work GB.:rocker:

Cheers Aaron

Those drawer fronts came out great and very professional indeed. Nice work GB.

RM, I'm pretty happy with them now that they are usable.

great job on the drawers l,ve all ways found draws a lot better for storage after l got given a old bank counter cabinet that had long 100mm deep drawers great for every day tools etc

aussiesteve, when I originally setup the garage I just assumed peg board was the answer, but since adding the drawers it's just soooo much better. The peg board is just about empty now.

Thanks for dropping in.

All, tonights session was kaizen foaming up a drawer for the chisels and scrapers etc.

Took about an hour to do this draw. Getting more confident with working with the kaizen foam though and trying to get things as close together as possible.

Cheers GB

GB, as usual top work.

I was looking at my drawers over the week end and have an issue with many of them in terms of which drawers a suited to using the Kaizen in:headscrat

My drawers are a little deeper than yours, so the thinking is to make up an insert that is easily removable with handles and do two layers so I can capitalize on the depth.

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup, insert drawers would certainly be the go. I will do the same on 2 or 3 of the original kitchen draws (the ones where I have done the measuring implements in one so far) as they are deeper also. I have used the 30mm kaizen which I think is a good thickness.

Just need to plan in some saw time now so I can cut the bits for drawer phases 2, 3 and 4. :headscrat

Cheers GB.

I was looking in my drawers over the week end and saw evidence of the golden years.

My drawers are a little deeper than yours,

Drawers or pockets? That wasn't very nice:sad: My pockets appear deeper than yours because mine have holes in the bottoms.

so the thinking is to make up an insert that is easily removable with handles and do two layers so I can capitalize on the depth.

Regards

Might be nice to make a one hand handle for easy tool retrieve and replacement.

Any photo evidence Andy?

Files tonight. Need to make/find some handles for the flat file and the needle files (anyone handy at turning wood on the lathe ?).

Still have room for growth in this draw, which is good as I need to get a rasp or two and probably another half round as I use that quite often.

Also took the regulator assembly off the air compressor tonight so I can start working on the shop air.

Need to find some extra Saturdays....hmmmm

Andy you are on to it. I really have to stop and think about what will work here..:headscrat

One thing I do need to consider is what are the go to tools that need to be what I would call "reasonably accessible " versus the not so used stuff.

Another thing I need to think about is what is called " scope of application creep " as we all love to buy new tools so just how do I future proof and allow some fat to do this. Maybe I am over thinking things :dunno:

Let me ponder this one..

Andy, ideally I'm after 12 small handles for the needle files. They have a 3mm (1/8") diameter shaft, the shaft needs to go into the handle 40-45 mm (1-1/2" to 1-3/4")

Your thoughts ?

Thanks. GB

I might turn you some up if you can wait:eyecrazy:

Andy you are on to it. I really have to stop and think about what will work here..:headscrat

I initially thought a four finger slot in the top base plate, but a nice fat door style pull might work. Need to be able to grab it, lift, and apply enough torque to get it set back down level regardless of being loaded a little off center.

For me it would be duplicates or special grinds on the tools below.

I can't consider the foam inserts because it seems my tools are in a state of flux. More friends stopping by all the time who need a place to stay. That's why nails in the wall works for me: Always room for one more:rocker: I know, clutter, clutter, clutter:eyecrazy:

1/2 cup I had the same "what to do if I get more tools" thoughts. In the end I just jumped in and did it. The foam looks good and you can just "see" where things are and also know easily what is missing.

Worse case if you get new goodies is you budget in another sheet of foam for around $25 bucks, or make more drawers :D

If you are going to make some insert drawers then you will should get plenty of space anyway depending on what each drawer will hold.

Lilscorpian also has some good insert drawers in his tooling organisation thread.

Andy, I'd be totally chuffed if you were to turn some file handles.

No hurry, they have been sitting patiently for a few years so a bit longer will not hurt at all.

Cheers GB

GB: with as nice a job as you did on that little shelf to drawers project i bet you can start building furniture for your home or office too. WELL DONE SIR!!

i also like how you are not overcrowding the drawers with your stuff and using the foam. i'm not saying i could live with only a few tools in a big drawer, but it looks nice.

cheers

Thanks drives, there is always something to build...

My current draw contents list to fill phase 1 and 2 is something like this:
1. chisels (kaizen foamed - room for a few more)
2. drill bits imperial (pvc pipe lined)
3. drill bits metric (pvc pipe lined)
4. taps/dies/future milling (probably pvc pipe lined)
5. router bits/forstner bits etc (probably pvc pipe lined)
6. screw drivers (kaizen foamed - room for a couple more)
7. hex drivers etc (still deciding layout)
8. files (kaizen foamed - room for 2 or 3 more)
9. spanners metric & imperial (coiled wire holder for now)
10. sockets (orig moulded case)
11. pliers (probably pliers rack like many here do)
12. hammers (just loose)

Today was mainly domestic tasks, however this evening I did start prep for drawers phase 2. Room for 5 more in this space.

I need to lift the RH side of the upper cabinet about 5mm.

Also layed out the bits ready to get the air lines run. I should have the last couple of reducer fittings arrive on Monday.

LH side is the regulator, an output coupler, drain (need another ball valve), then the top T will be the feed for the air reel before going up to run along the ceiling.

Middle is the back wall drop and drain.

RH side is the workbench drop and drain.

View media item 68281
Probably will mount the regulator assembly on the wall here at the back of the compressor, it will be safe out of the way then feed up above the soon to be built bench above it with air tool storage.

Will run slight fall across the ceiling back to the A/C. Should be more than adequate for what I need for the time being.

View media item 68282
Anyway see what happens tomorrow....

I'll just echo the sentiments already expressed - the drawers look great GB.

Good pick-up with the tape too - although I tend to measure everything in metric, my brain is still very much wired for imperial (I struggle to visualize any metric measurements - I have to convert them to imperial in my head to get any idea of what it looks like. :headscrat).

Love the drawer liners... But I think I'll need to triple the number of drawers I have if I go that route! My tool drawers all have tools piled on top of one another. I do love it though.

Draws look great. Still need to get/try the foam.

A cheap broom handle could yield numerous file handles. I wonder if Andy could come up with a handle with a broom so you can sweep away the filings. :headscrat

Thanks Mark, I grew up with metric, but sometimes feet and inches is just easier.

Gerard I'm not to bad with 16th's, have to start thinking when you want to talk 32'ths :headscrat

GB, looking forward to seeing how your air line project goes.

Another bucket list one for here as well..

Regards

Thanks 1/2 Cup, I'm looking forward to see how it goes too :). The misc 1/2" to 1/4" reducer bits came in yesterday, so pretty much ready to go. I've pulled the lengths of copper in from under the house, so just need to tee up a few hours with my dad to bring his oxy gear down. Oh and I need to make up the standoff brackets similar to how Andy did his.

Love the drawer liners... But I think I'll need to triple the number of drawers I have if I go that route! My tool drawers all have tools piled on top of one another. I do love it though.

Ha, Andrew yep I don't think kaizen is for every draw, but certainly helps with the ones I've done so far. I still need to sort out where things like pullers and spring compressors etc will live, kinda gave the 2 deep draws for that stuff to the kids :headscrat

Thanks Shorty, I do have a broken broom handle that I was going to use as dowels for things to hang on the french cleat wall, but never thought of using that for file handles. Kind of keen to see what Andy turns out...

Is there such a thing as a swarfer ?

JP, appreciate you taking the time to reading through it all. There is always something going on, wish I had a few more Saturdays during the week :(

All, so pulled this lamp out of the big bin at work. One of the guys seems to have cracked off the clamping mechanism that clamps it to the desk it seems. Works perfectly, I've stuck in one of the 13w LED bulbs to test.

View media item 68350
I think I'll fixup the pivot points by replacing the plastic with aluminium, similar to what Vieux did in his thread recently, then maybe give it a hit with some hammertone paint. Was thinking of adding a french cleat base to it so it can go over near where the drill press and vise bench is currently.

Some extra draw slides should arrive tomorrow, so will be trying to schedule a couple of hours to cut up the various bits to finish off drawers phase2.

Cheers GB.

GB I totally understand the desire for more Saturdays every week. Doesn't seem to matter for me if I have a 2 day or a 3 day weekend. I could always use an extra day to get into something else, or work on more projects.

JP - I got mostly a full Sunday in today :bounce::bounce::bounce:

All, helped Dad yesterday re-hang the laundry door at his place, just think old heavy solid core door & double brick & new made up jamb assembly = fiddly.

Anyway the kidlets had a stay up there last night which = QST for me today :)

Drawers phase 2 is complete....

I was too lazy to move up the top cabinet 5mm on the RH side (actually ran out of time), hence why I have the doors off it...

Grrr, Monday tomorrow :(

Those "draws" finished up fantastic. And even with life getting in the way of construction you did this really fast.
Does this mean we can call you "Quick Draw" GB? :lol_hitti

Ok, sorry for the cheap humor attempt but seriously a great job!

Count me as loving your built in "draw" stack. Great storage indeed!! At my age, I would have to label them or they would be worn out with all my sliding them in and out to see what I had put where.

Great and "very neat" job!!

all those draws are great, you must now have your head around the construction and installation as l think that it would take me a week of sundays to do what you did in a day . More draws is some thing l need to look at .
cheers

Thanks aussiesteve. These ones certainly went faster than the first lot. Makes a difference what you can get done in most of a full day vs a bit here and there. I did plan and have as much ready to go as I could before hand to not lose any time.

Gee, you can come and get lazy at my place if that's what you get done, I love it.

Thanks Terrick. Uninterrupted QST is a rare beast with young ones.

Has your wife seen those? Surely she needs new drawers in the house!

They really look great!

Actually Andy I don't know if she's had a good look a these yet :dunno:

Ha, don't know about quick RM...:headscrat I think the big difference this time was getting all the cuts the same and repeated in single steps. That made assembly pretty fast. Learned from what needed tweaking on phase 1.

I also opted to buy new 1/4" mdf panels this time (about $8 for a 2' x 4' sheet which is enough for 2 draws and easy to trim on the table saw) as the last ones took ages from that recycled stack that needed de-stapling and they had all the old icky spray adhesive muck on them.

GB, far out those drawers are awesome..

Thanks 1/2 Cup.

Thanks Gerard.

as lots have mentioned those drawers turned out AWESOME. That is some real craftsmanship

JP, thanks. They are all currently populated with the list back a few posts ago. Just need to get in and finish off the drill bit draws setup.

:lol_hittiMaybe that should be your new "Handle" Rod.

Can't compete with you Dan. Mine are yet to move about and spit out any tools that aren't branded with a letter starting with C:)

I like sliding them just for fun at the moment.
