MB Gull Wing 300sl. Back in SF there was a guy who had one one these - and drove it regularly. It was well maintained, but not pampered much, the paint was pretty much worn down (on some cars, like this one, that worn down paint has a great patina look) glass pitted, but at least it wasn't a friggen garage queen. Always nice to see old metal tooling around.

$600k?

MB has that new gull wing coming out - not near as sharp looking.

I believe I sad Mercedes first. I thought that was what it was but it seemed to obvious. $350k - 400k at Barret Jackson. Mercedes is coming out with a new version of the gullwing.

Private party sales are showing mid 500 for a perfect one. I do remember seeing one going for a 280k asking in 08.

300 SL with Rudge wheels... I used to transport these cars for the world's largest 300SL collector in the world (late 80's)... at one time he owned around 15 coupes and 20-some roadsters. He owned SL #2 and SL #4. Rumor was he offered $3,000.000 for #3 that was stored at Gullwing Services in Essex, MA.

This story is heart wrenching! It's like having the winning lottery numbers and not making it to the quick check on time. Damn!

BTW, this one was bought for $500k according to the care taker. Mere bag of shells. He had 11 other antique beauties parked nearby.

WOW, no offense meant to everyone here but how can you guys call yourself car guys and not catch exactly what car that was ? Had I been on here at 3 yesterday I would have been the first to correctly not guess but say what it is, maybe not down to the year but it certainly was not a Aston or any other of the makes that were mentioned.

Come on, we are supposed to be car guys, we all should have known exactly what that was. And I am not even a Mercedes fan. I would not expect you and I certainly don't know all cars either, I am frequently stumped but this is not some one off car that is unknown,

Car guys wouldn't necessarily know about Mercedes cars, they might be American Muscle car guys. Some may not even want to know about Mercedes.

As I recall I had it right off the bat although I did think it was too easy (but I've driven one) and might have been some sort of kit car or made up from a different car. The rest of the posts on my part were just goofing around, I'm sure some of the others were as well.

What car is this (off the top of you head, a true car guy will know immediately).

lol, it was addressed to ME, sorry I don't live here on GJ :)

I said no offense, I have friends who could not identify a FORD from a Chevy and I trust them to work on my motors, it just seems to me that a Gullwing is a icon of the automotive world and should be recognizable by anyone. Now a Cortina is not a icon but still should be recognizable to most.

I do NOT want to get into a war or even a game of guess that car, I fully realize that we all know something about cars that the others don't and I am not going to get into that game, we all have our specific areas of interest and we can all easily stump each other with car trivia, I was just surprised that gullwing would not be known by most, now that I also know you were joking it makes more sense.

I know I was goofing again, I just made a "no offense" post myself, I'm expecting some heat.

Ah, ok. That is a nice example. I'm used to seeing it in silver. Might be why others could not recognize it. That and it was an *** end shot.

Not for Mickey O but for the others as I think he knows. What makes this a '69 over a '70 or '71 as far as visuals? :)

I don't know, but would like to know. I like that body style.
