Should be a blue for water there also. Maybe a green for sewage. You really don't want to hit anything when you dig. The yellow ok I guess is the biggest one, if you are using a diesel trencher you can't even shut it off after you cut the line it will keep on running until it catches fire and burns to the ground. You get a lot of attention when you cut a gas line, friend cut one had police, fire, utility workers and an ambulance out there in about 5 minutes with the hasmat team there too. Just was a 1/2" gas line but it was a mess.

The blue & green are marked out in the street - probably 75 ft. away. I assume since they don't go past the house they didn't mark them. Garage sits maybe 25 ft. behind the house. There are no markings around the garage - just the ok's.

Depending on where you live.......out here in Ca that is called underground service alert or USA North.


I remember about the time of Iraq war version 1.1, I was marking a service station site with white paint for installation of soil borings and monitoring wells. I swear the two dudes from the "does that thing have a Hemi" we're driving by as I was spraying USA on the sidewalk and they began to chant U.S.A. over and over.

I've hit two gas lines with my tractor's box blade. The first one was in the middle of a lot, a building burned down so someone just dropped a sack of concrete onto the shut-off valve when they cleaned up. Fast forward twenty years or so, I'm grading the lot when I hit a chunk of concrete. The blade bounces over it and I hit it again the next pass. It breaks and I shear off the valve. I have a stream of gas shooting into the air right behind my diesel tractor so I cut it off and step off and away. I call the fire department, they come out and pound a tapered plug into the line and I drive off and never hear anything else about it. The gas company comes out and pulls the abandoned tap and I finish the job the next day. The next time I hit one it was an abandoned tap buried in a driveway. I felt a little tug and smelled just a little whiff of gas. I drive a ways away and walk back over to where I smelled the gas and had to get down on my hands and knees to see the little bit of dust being blown up from the crack in the valve. This time I called the gas company direct. They came out and pulled the tap, then they sent me a bill for close to $500 worth of gas! We went 'round and 'round for months, finally I got stuck with paying around $150 or so ( it's been a while). The moral to the story, call the fire department, let them get there and then leave! **** calling the gas company!

You get a lot of attention when you cut a gas line,

not around here. I was working next to a guy running a backhoe when he tore up a natural gas line. It was spewing and stinking. he kept running the backhoe as if it couldnt explode. I had visions of the entire city block going up in flames so I left. An hour later I came back, he was still working, the gas was still spewing. I called my boss and told him I was leaving and I did.

Takes a big spark to set off a Nat gas leak. We've hit our share of high pressure lines- probably a couple of dozen over the last 40 years. This is back when we did lots of underground site work (water & sewer) & took them out w/ a backhoe. Many were mis-marked by Gas Co. Back in the 80's, we took out a gas main in Glendale- a few houses from a McDonalds. That was a big leak- pulled the steel main right out of the saddle in the street (steel line). Whole neighborhood stunk of gas. Police evacuated McDonalds. Gas Co shows up- fire department shows up- gas co has us use our backhoe to dig up street to expose the line. Soil was very sandy & the biggest worry was trying to see down in the hole. It was like a sand storm in there. That main blew gas for probably 2 hours before they got a cap on it. No one seemed concerned that it could blow any minute. That's more like TV stuff. Thank god we called & had utilities marked before we started. Gas co missed their line by 8 ft! Would have cost us a fortune- their error, no cost to us.

As of Jan 1 in Indiana if you damage a buried utility there IS a $10,000.00 fine plus repair cost and lost revenue for the utility company. so call before you dig is a must ! Ya done good Cartracer23 good luck with your project.

Take more pics with site features in the background. Keep with your records to prove it was marked along with your ticket number. This is good info to have later if something goes wrong.
