I'm always amazed at the number of guests here viewing. This section has members only viewing at this time but General tool section has 100 or so members but over 300 guests viewing.
Is there a way to view a daily New member count? Just curious.

This place has a wealth of information and answers...people search/google for stuff all the time and get results here. That plus all the usual bots and crawlers that are indexing this place.

Yea, it took me a few visits before I signed up. Not sure why it takes folks longer than that.

I would bet that over half of the "guests" are regulars who have not bothered to log in. If you run CCleaner or a similar utility that erases cookies then your login history is erased and you don't automatically get logged in without giving the board your password. If I am just looking and have no particular interest in free parking, I might very well lurk without logging in to just to see what is going on. My guess is that others do the same.

I think some people just want to read about things that interest them and not take part in discussions. This place has a lot of things that get discussed.

My desktop auto logs me in, but my phone does not. the 'new posts' search works better for me that way. I might be on both counts right now.

I think my computer and my tablet might be viewing as guests right now. My phone is the only one that stays logged on.

It didn't take me long to join. I really enjoy the folks here, and the knowledge they so freely share
I visited for a short while and then joined too. It didn't take me too long to realize a lot of things discussed here I actually know something about and can offer some advice on. By the same token I have learned a lot from this forum and to be quite honest, I probably learned more than I have given back. I shall try to remedy that.

Spiders indexing the Internet are usually identified as "Guests" by most forum software. As they crawl through a forum, in some implementations they can also ratchet the "read" counts on posts. For a forum as large an active as this one, I would not be surprised if there were hundreds of spiders indexing the site at any given instant.

Not too surprising. I read threads on other forums of which I'm not a member, just getting there by googling something. With the depth and breadth of things discussed here, it makes sense that we'd have a lot of visitors.

I'm not surprised. I found several threads on here from google searches I would do. Like others said, I often find myself reading threads on other forums that I'm not a member of.

For example, if you do any sort of search on wall materials to use in a garage, a GarageJournal thread is almost always the 1st result. Same thing for a lot of specific tool searches.

Non-members can still see the pictures if they're hosted elsewhere.

Can you dumb this down to basic English for me please, it sounds interesting but I don't know what it is?

A Web crawler, sometimes called a spider, is an Internet bot that systematically browses the World Wide Web, typically for the purpose of Web indexing (web spidering).

Web search engines and some other sites use Web crawling or spidering software to update their web content or indices of others sites' web content. Web crawlers copy pages for processing by a search engine which indexes the downloaded pages so users can search more efficiently.

Thanks, I guessed it might be something similar - actually now it reminds me of "The Matrix"!

I think they can. I was googling tool storage ideas and landed on the "Let's see your toolbox thread". After 2 days of oogling the pics I joined. A week later I bought my first tool chest.

Been spending money ever since.

Guests can't see pictures that are hosted here. If the picture is on another website, and there's just a link here, then guests can see them.

Well...then there is the "Invisible Mode' you can set on your Control Panel page.

Even if you are logged in the system will not display you as online nor will you count as a User.
