Gun Barrell Drill bits

Hey, I work as an acft maint tech and just recently retired early from a major airline. One of the irreplaceable tools that I had was what we called gun barrel drill bits. I am down to the last few and can't find a source, even on-line. Does anyone knows where I can pick up a few of these beauties. They are made to cut only on the tip so as not to mess up any pre-existing holes. I'll bring some home from work and post a pic tomorrow.

Gun drills and aircraft extension drills are common.

Never heard of a "gun barrel" drill, however.

Deep hole drilling requires more than "special" bits. It also incorporates the proper guide and bushing system.

You mean the bits that are 12-18in long but the flutes are only 1/2in at the business end?

He's talking about margin-less drills with a very shallow cutting angle. The term "gunbarrel drill" is basically a nick name. These drills allow an airframe mechanic to back drill through existing fastener holes into a new part without enlarging the aforementioned holes. Personally, I can't find them anywhere except at work. I don't know if my employer makes them in-house or has contracted with a vendor.

Yet another reason to lament the demise of Boeing Surplus. We formerly were able to buy them buy the pound. On some military contracts, the tooling couldn't be transferred to any other use and much new stuff we taxpayers bought were sold as surplus.
