Ok so I have been pondering on making a dueling tree for .22s I was wondering what the minimal steel thickness would be? I need it to be heavy enough to with stand the shot but light enough to make it swing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Check out Targetman on ebay. I built one of his trees for center fire. He has the paddles for rimfire also

I shoot .45 at 3/8" plate, couple hundred rounds and no damage yet.

The Shootsteel website has great targets and great deals.

My favorite is the nice little popper I can carry out and stick in the ground anywhere without a hassle. Really gets you out shooting more.

Would 1/8 free swing steel be thick enough for a 22lr? I have lots of scrap metal at work. The only thing this project is going to cost me is some time. I'm not worried about it holding shape after a few 100 rounds. A hammer can flatten them back out. I'll all so make a few extra ones if need be.

Handgun is an entirely different world.

With that said OP, burn up the free metal. I've got some 5/8" plates I made in HS that I still roast with the AR...figure I'll use them up and replace with AR500 as needed (have 4 AR 500 so far).

Doesnt take much to stop .22LR. The commercial ones arent expensive. If you get the weight wrong, cut the tubing the ******* fits into at a different angle.

Mix it up with Tannerite and these:

Balloons tied to firewood are fun also.

I think 1/8" thick is plenty strong for a .22 and if not make another one, shop day, beer, and all that

For my 22’s and air rifles I use Necco wafers as targets. Especially good for kids. Of course, I’m always happy when I hit too

Threw this little guy together for me nephew out of 1/4” for my nephew and it has held up great against a 22. IMG_2458.JPG

I have also done swinging targets out of 3/8 slip blinds but anything more than a 9 pokes right through

I make my own. Two local Metal Supply shops sell AR500 targets in different sizes and thicknesses. They even run sales on them, just have to watch.

May want to check if your up for making your own stands.
