Gun tools

So I broke down and did something I really wanted -- I bought a new gun! Some freelance work came in, paid off some bills and decided to treat myself to a Sig Sauer P220r 45acp.

Now the tool question. I know Sig offers an "armorer's kit" featuring a small array of proprietary tools, but are these items really proprietary or are they commonly available to buy elsewhere for cheap? I know I don't have to have them, but I like having the goodies on hand should I need them. That, and it's buying new tools -- you guys can understand that!

So any input from those with experience in this arena?

You need a screwdriver and a punch to totally disassemble and reassemble the Sig P2xx guns, I have disassembled and reassembled probably more than 30 of them (I'm a gunsmith and do a lot of coatings) If you want to buy some tools then buy a set of GUNSMITH screw drivers and a set of punches, that's all you need. The quality of Brownells screwdrivers in my opinion are marginal at best. PB Swiss sells hollow ground screwdrivers that are much better quality than Brownells, Chapman, Wheeler or Forster. Hollow Ground is what you want for gun work.

brass punches of different sizes

I had been looking at an older 1911 that had been parkerized, but was left with the impression (in that case) that it was like an old car with an Maaco paint job. Would like to find a nice older Colt at some point.

I find the Chapman screwdriver kits which have hollow ground flat tips a very good tool for gunsmithing. I have had my kits for for over 30 years and they are still my go to drivers for those special fasteners. You don't want to ****** up any screw slots on a collectible gun.

I'm pretty sure Chapman makes the ones that Sears sells under the Craftsman name, if they're not Chapman should be suing them. So sear might be an option.

I like Lyman products. I have their hammer and roll pin punch set for doing work on rifles. I also own some Grace brass punches. They came in a nice little pouch and made in USA.

I got my tools from Midwayusa and Brownells.

I forgot to add, I use CLP for lubrication of my firearms. I use Hoppes #9 for cleaning out the gunk. Their copper cleaner is the best IMO.

You guys make me jealous. To purchase a handgun in Canada:

1. Take a certified firearms safety course specific to handguns.
2. Join an approved range.
3. Apply to a federal bureaucracy for a firearms license. They will contact your spouse/common law/ex-wife/ex-common-law and ask if they're scared of you owning a firearm. If they say yes, no license. This license must be renewed every 5 years. They also do a police criminal check.
4. If you get the firearms license, you can then buy a handgun. You need a permit to transport it home from the dealer.
5. You need a permit to take it from you home to the range and back. This ONLY allow you to take it from the range and back. It is illegal, and punishable by vicious penalties to take your handgun anywhere else. Yes, you cannot drive to a neighbors acreage and plink on his property. Only if you live on acreage can you shoot in your own back yard.
6. Carrying a concealed weapon is a criminal offense. Only the police can carry.
7. To take your handgun to the range or gunsmith, it must have a locked trigger guard, be placed in a locked approved container, and be out of site in your vehicle.
8. Oh, btw, if you let your handgun permit lapse, the moment it does so you can be charged with a criminal offense. Yes, criminal, not regulatory. Not a fine, but jail time if the judge so chooses.

I own a couple and even for rimfire rifles you have jump a ton of hoops just to be able to exercise your rights

What do you need a gun for in Canada, there's no crime there.

Sheesh, you're right. I forgot where I lived. Too much US media.

There's no crime in Canada. The air is clean. I get to ride my snowmobile from my igloo to work, but you have to be careful not to hit the moose meandering along the road. Healthcare is free. Oh, and in the summer we have no mosquitoes in the Red River valley.

Yep. Been there, done that. If you own or want one you must be planning to do something illegal. Being a handgun owner in Canada is almost as bad as being a pilot in the US.

I have a C&R, I just call up the out of state gunstores, tell em what I want & it arrives on a my doorstep a couple of days later....

However, all my rifles are WWI & WWII milsurps, not new plastic ****.

You've got that right. Our Supreme Court is barely more than a 50-50 split and can go either way in the future depending on who is voted to be president again. And it is those guys who are dictating our gun laws.

+1 on Brownells for gunsmithing tools they are the industry standard! If you had a Glock you would only need a single pin punch tool LOL! I really like Sigs as well, but happen to have been to Glock Armorer school since that is what we carried for years.

I recommend getting a good plastic faced hammer. BTW I'm into guns got a Glock 17 and a Brugger & Thomet TP9.
