Figured I'd post since I asked the questions a while ago but ended up finding the perfect solution for me.
I was searching for a nice quality gun smithing hammer because I am starting to now understand and believe there really is a tool for jobs that are specific. Thanks garage journal..lol
I kept searching catalogs and online and found nothing but chinese **** that was expensive and all the reviews were garbage.
I found someone on a smith and wesson forum that made gun smithing hammers. Made in the USA and from some of the reviews that people made really enjoyed the hammer. I specificly joined their forum just to be able to post and see pictures, and I ended up contacting the gentleman that made them. The thread was a couple years old so I had figured he stopped making them figuring my luck... Couple days later he got back to me and said he should be able to make some in about 3 weeks... fast forward to now and below is what I got.
He makes a couple different ones. This is called the Midnight Pro.
Welp as pictured here are a couple pictures I took. This is without question one of the best quality tools I have seen and felt. This is right there with Snap-On quality.
There is WEIGHT to this hammer... it's not light. And it's not too heavy but it does have a good amount of weight so that you aren't swinging the hammer like crazy, the weight of it will do the work. I got both sizes, honestly because I couldn't decide which one to get so figured I'd get use out of both of them. The smaller size I actually prefer when working on the 1911... the larger size probably the AR15 build when I start it...
Size comparison with a pen. I didn't realize how small the smaller hammer was but I love it!
Milling on handle:
Hope this helps someone as I know it's a pain in the **** sometimes trying to find stuff or if there are a lack of reviews makes it hard to swallow "testing" something.. I got both of these hammers plus 5 heads (each hammer , so 10 total) for $70 shipped usps priority mail.
I was tired of seeing garbage when you go and type "gunsmithing hammer" or when you go to sites and see a hammer that looks ok with removable heads, but then all the reviews say it's garbage and made in china..etc. Without a doubt I feel like this should be sold in every store that sells guns...lol
I'm not associated with SHOO in any way but I am a very firm believer that when something is of good quality it needs to be seen by people so they can have something that will last and isn't made in China. I have no doubt that these two hammers will last me the rest of my life. I can post his contact information if anyone is interested, not sure if it's allowed on here, because I want to again say I am not advertising for him but this made my week seeing it and using it to work on my 1911 tonight with putting it all back together.
EDIT:
wow, lots of PM's.
Here's his information.
His name is Randy, email is: [email protected]
His nick name on fourms-1911.com is: SHOOMAN Pretty sure its the same name on smith and wesson as well.
Very nice guy!
