Guten Tag from Germany

Being a long time lurker since i discovered the Garage Journal around a year ago, i thought it's about time to finally register and - hopefully - contribute with a few useful posts myself after i learnt so much while reading this forum.

As the title already tells i live in Germany, or more accurate in the Stuttgart region where i work as a bicycle mechanic for a local Postal Service Company, doing maintenance and repairs for their fleet of delivery bicycles and ebikes.

Otherwise i'm also infected with the 'tool-virus' like many other users around here and reading thru the General-Tools subforum already burnt a hole in my pocket. There are just to many nice hand tools out there in the world!

In this regard, I look forward to a lively exchange with you guys!

Retired disaster manager, wrench turner, and bridge climber from the States, now living down in central Umbria... did my share of wrenching on everything 2 wheeled, and tho I'm probably too old to do it comfortably, I miss it and envy your job, now it's mainly catch as catch can...

While it's sometimes really bothersome since my colleagues constantly destroy the most impossible things you can imagine, i really like this job and i would miss it if i couldn't wrench on the bikes.

While it's sometimes really bothersome since my colleagues constantly destroy the most impossible things you can imagine, i really like this job and i would miss it if i couldn't wrench on the bikes.

And I bet they do it in the most impossible ways - "if we put the battery in backwards, won't it still run?" or "I thought I could fix it myself and save you the trouble"... or my favorite, Why can't I install my own accessories on the company vehicles"...

Probably one of the most important things when I retired and relocated was to set up my own shop... so I could still get my hands dirty at times. We own most of the outbuildings next door as well (19th century "apartments")abandoned since the 1950's, so my plan is to convert our 2 on the end into an actual shop shop. (It even has a driveway to it - overgrown for 40-50 years, but it's there). But the buildings aren't in deplorable shape (ours aren't, anyway), and while rough, give a framework for this project.

All this while learning both the bureaucracy of Italy and threading that path while learning the language. Fun times!!!

That one made me chuckle! You absolutely nailed it - this is how it usually goes.

But you forgot the "what's that screetching sound over there? Anyways, i just keep driving." And the "i can fix it myself"-guys are the worst tho. Always leaving an even bigger mess than it was before.

An own workshop is the nicest thing to have. My grandfather inherited me a nice condo that also has an own storage room on the ground floor, which i'm at the moment slowly transforming to my little cave.
