I need gutters for my metal pole building (30' X 40') and I'm wondering what the best route is. I priced everything in vinyl from the box stores and it came out to be about $4.28 lf with 3 X 4 downspouts!! That seems a little crazy to me. Also, I wonder about the quality. Would I get a better deal and better quality with a seamless gutter place?? What about snow sliding off the building? Do I need the snow guards? They were expensive!! I put my doors on the gable sides so I wouldn't need them and I hope I still don't.

I would never use anything but seamless gutters and the bigger the better. Those vinyl ones are a mess, definitely don't use though

Seamless is the only way to go. Now, since you have a metal roof your either going to need to put snow/ice guards on or go without the gutters. The show sliding off your roof will take those beautiful gutters and turn them into spaghetti.

Excellent point on the ice guards if you're in a climate that gets any amount of snow. I went with 6" industrial gutters on my metal roof as well as 2 rows of snow guards staggering each row. No snow guards and say goodbye to those nice new gutters once the heavy snow/ice slides down that metal roof.

A bit of a hijack, but may be relevant to the OP. How did you seal the holes you drilled for the snow guards?

I have a gutter across the face of my 24x48, but it's hung a bit below the plane of the roof. That way the sliding snow overshoots the gutter. 20 years, no issues in that regard.

Got a pic so we can get a better idea?

I have no picture to post, but my gutters were installed like WQ59Bs.....the outer edge of the gutter is below the plane of the roof. The installer said when the snow slides from the roof, it will clear the outer most edge of the gutter. We will see, as they were just put up in May.

Seamless K-line 5" W' quick screw- screw clips is what you want. If you have snow get the snow gaurds unless you want to buy gutters every year. Then meausure the length of the roof and add an inch to the overall meausurment. Get a gutter company to come run your lengths and drop them along with the ds. If you can't install it get a young gutter installer that wants a side job, they usually don't make squat. Hope this helps. I was the lead and the cutter on a truck so I probably ran a million miles. If you have questions PM me and I will see what I can do.

Go with a pro. That is a lot of roof that will collect a lot of rain.
You will want over sized gutters set low.
And over sized down spouts, 4x6.

The snow guards seem to depend on the orientation of the roof.
I believe it is the south or west facing slopes need them.

Again, this is a relatively low cost add on that can make or break your over all satisfaction with your shop.

I had a local guy do it seamless gutters. They matched the color perfect I had 2- 48 foot runs with extra large downspouts. I only wanted them on one end of the runs. Also a 16ft porch. $450 total. They did a great job and I think it was a great price.

That was an EXCELLENT price!!

I'm just going to hang them low like some guys did on here. I'll look into seamless ones but I heard they are very thin and flimsy as well??!? :dunno:

Another thing to consider if you dont have water run to your shop is to have one of the downspouts drain into a poly water container (I am setting up a 150 gallon system) set on an elevated wooden platform and have it gravity drain into a deep sink in your shop (the sink drain will just go out onto the pasture).

My new 24'x32' pole barn shop is too far to hook into the existing water lines for now and thats what I have planned. I should have enough saved to run electricity to the shop next month and get my wood stove hooked up and then the gutters and downspouts will be next but the snow guard comment gives me something to think about. We dont get much snow usually but it would be my luck we would get a record breaking snow event right after I put on my gutters.

I have a standing seem roof on my garage and like some of the other guys posted, my gutters are low enough that the ice and snow slide right over them. I will post a picture later.

Edit: Picture

Ask for .032 gauge available in either residential (5") or commercial (6") and they won't be flimsy or thin! Big box store sections are about about as thin as trim coil. (.019?) Standard residential would be .027.

Also ask for HD screwmount hangers, Raytec makes a good one.

And as mentioned, front lip of gutter should be below the roof plane, snow shoes are still a good idea.

Even all this will not fully protect a bad ice situation. I've had a particularly bad building with commercial gutters supporting giant icicles from eve to ground. Didn't rip the gutter off, but crushed the downspouts when the ice broke and fell. For this reason, I'll never guarantee against ice damage. Too many other factors I can't control.
