H.F. Tool Chest Workbench Question

Hey folks, I have been reading a while and getting plenty of ideas for my garage. One thread I saw was building the workbench with four H.F. roller chests. I like that idea but was wondering from those of you who have done this, is there any reason or downside to building the bench so that the tool chest still has its wheels on it ? That way if needed I can just roll out the box. I want to use two boxes with a space between them so I can sit down at the bench to work on things if needed.

I haven't done one of those projects, but one downside I can think of would be raising the workbench height higher than what you would want. Another downside mentioned in some of the threads, I think, was that the casters might not lock and the boxes might roll out from the bench at appropriate times.

I have two of them that I made into a workbench and recently purchased at husky at homedepot which was 41 inch in length and came with a top chest cabinet for $298 so for 100 cheaper you can have more. You should check it out good luch

Thanks for the responses guys. I didn't think about them rolling out. I was wondering what the height difference was with casters a opposed to being suspended up on a frame.

The main considerations with using the tool chests to support the work surface are the overall height, and the rigidity, or sturdiness of the finished bench.
Riding on their wheels, the HF chests are 40" to the top of the sides. Adding a workbench surface will make them 41~42" high. This is a little tall for most folks.

if height is your issue .. im sure this could save you about 4 inches. build a creeper type caster setup. could use the stock wheels or upgrade to a nicer set.
