Went over to the local Restore today to poke around as I like to do on occasion. I spotted a Harbor Freight 40lb Abrasive blast tank with all the valves, parts and pieces on it. Then saw the price tag. 25 Bucks!!! Checked the website on my iPhone and saw they were going for $110 new so I snatched it up. Got it home and hooked it up to the compressor and discovered it still has media in it too!! Best score there to date for sure. Now I need to make me a blast cabinet:evil:

I love my Restore. Just last week I got an old Firestone breaker bar and bucket of about 35 old USA sockets. I have had a few other good scores there too but 3/4 of the time I leave with nothing.

If I ever need a radial arm saw, I know they will have a few just waiting for me to pick from!

I went to two in Ft. Worth, TX this weekend. The one in Albuquerque, NM is much better.:D

From what I have read here, there seems to be some that are quite good and others that are not so great. I guess it all just depends on the local organization.

Yeah I pop in to the San Diego one every couple of weeks just to root around. I'm always on the look out for the little plastic storage drawer units. I've bought four from there so far, all for 5 bucks a pop and always full of misc hardware. Got a Black and Decker palm sander for ten bucks, big spool of wire for ten bucks, **** ton of self tapping sheet metal screws for 15 bucks, etc. This is my best score yet though.

They do have an old shop smith there for $200 bucks that has been sitting there for a few months now. I'm not too familiar with this tool or what it can do though. Or if that is a good price for one (Im sure it is though)

Any tools ours gets most likely go home with the folks that work there. I've never found anything good at ours.

Shopsmiths are one of those "do it all" pieces of equipment. Table saw, drill press, lathe... and more with other attachments. $200 is a steal! I'm no expert on them at all but from what I've seen the mostly aluminum ones made in the last 2-3 decades seem to be a little "loose" in their tolerances but still a pretty good machine. The OLD ones were built like a battleship and probably weigh at least 50% more than the later ones. I bought a 10ER model from an older fellow almost 30 years ago and have yet to have a place to set it up but it isn't going anywhere. I'll be building a shop soon and it'll finally have a home. :willy_nil
Here's a pic of one of the older ones...

I too am a "regular" at our local Habit ReStore! I have gotten to know all the staff who look out for me. I have picked up some Blackhawk tools + lots of scap steel for welding projects! Plus all the $$ goes to a good cause!

The ReStores really vary from one neighborhood to the next. I used to have a handful I checked during my lunch breaks while visiting job sites around the region. (Actually 9 stores in 3 states.) The difference between Orange County and Los Angeles County is hard to believe. My favorite unfortunately closed up shop and the ones near the old office were not so great. I do miss dropping into the San Diego store. There is one south of Houston TX that was pretty impressive when I was there. Overall though, I don't see too many tools in southern California, at least not anything I would be proud to bring home. Would love to hit some stores in the mid west.

This. I've volunteered at our local one once in a while. There are some older guys that are retired that just hang out there and when they see a tool they like they stash it away, price it right for themselves and then buy it. Also the good stuff hits the floor right away so if it makes it past the workers it is usually gone pretty quick.

The one by me is terrible. Apparently most of what they get comes from Grainger. They routinely put retail price$xxxx.00 Restore price $xxxx.00. The problem is they are quoting Grainger prices which noone really pays anyway. I could order from them and get 30% off the top if I ask nicely then the price would only be 20-30% more than anywhere else on the planet. Plus all the items are returns and missing pieces etc. They had a commercial water heater there with a retail price of $4500 Restore price $2500 and it had a big dent in it. They have loads of 3 phase motors for only $250+ a piece again returns and 3 phase. The pricing people have no clue. I think it must be an old Tradesman who thinks he is pricing out a government contract and pulling out his reference Grainger book.

That Harbor Freight blast cabinet would of cost $150 at my Restore store except it would be abusively used and missing parts.

I hear comments on GJ how people love Restore stores. I don't even know why I continue to go there. I always leave frustated and somewhat angry. I always tell myself this time will be different but it never is and the stock is usually unchanged.

Sounds familiar. The one nearest my old office was loaded with Lowes donations. Same problem, missing and broken parts and prices higher than the Lowes clearance price I had seen a week or two earlier. Still, I scored enough odds and ends stuff to keep me going back. Better odds than Vegas I suspect.

This ^^^ my local one has a **** ton of lathes, saws, compressors, tool boxes etc.. behind "the fence" with the big not for sale sign on it. Half the stuff looked like it was donated from Home Depot.

It's a **** shoot for sure, but it doesn't hurt to spend ten minutes sifting around. Especially in the misc and bulk hardware section which is where I typically find most of the stuff I wind up buying. The shop smith looks like an old one but I can't be sure. Waiting to see if they drop the price on it as they seem to do when stuff sits around too long there. I got a cool looking light fixture for our eventual home purchase in the coming months they had marked down to 30 bucks from 65 they had it at originally.

They dose to get tools pretty regular at my store, though most seem to be pretty crappy ie seen some decent stuff crop up. Still kicking myself for not snatching up the old sears craftsman radial chop saw they had for a few weeks for 60 bucks. My problem is I'm trying not to buy too much now until we buy our house. Less stuff to try and find space to store now and less to move later and so on.

Less stuff to move is always a good plan. Up here in LA and Orange County Craftsman Radial Arm Saws regularly show up on Craigslist for $50. Not sure if you meant radial arm saw or sliding compound miter saw though. Either way, don't kick yourself too hard. There will be another one. Hopefully before you need it. Same with the ShopSmith.

Of the 3 ReStores in Houston, I go to the southern one on 610 most often. It has a pretty good selection of doors, tile, paint, pavers, cabinets and flooring. They almost always have decent kitchen appliances and sometimes they have really high end ovens and ranges. (Bosch, JennAire, Thermador, Dacor) The have been reorganizing the store and it is cleaner, and better looking now.

The one off of 59 has limited hours, and is small and junky. They were working on cleaning up, and organizing last time I was there. They do have a good electrical section, and lots of marble and granite.

The one north of Houston, off Jones Rd and 290 is VERY well run. It looks the most like a traditional store. They have tons of cabinets, brick, conduit, doors, bathroom stuff, hardware. They have a small section of what I'd call "thrift store" items as well.

In all the stores, stock changes constantly, but it does seem that each store has some donors that they get regularly.

All of the stores are operated (at least in part) by volunteers and they rely on contributions for stock, so keep that in mind.

I always consider it worth the 15 mins to walk thru if I'm in the neighborhood anyway.

I almost never see tools in any of the stores. (I have seen the occasional overpriced machine, and the one on 610 got a huge load of Harbor Freight!! returns. Why you would buy returns from HF, I don't know, but people did.) I bought 4 rusty Proto wrenches for $4 once, but I consider that an extreme aberration!)

At least in Houston, there are bargains to be had and it helps people.

Yeah I meant the mitre saw. Something I don't have and wil surely need once we purchase our first home. But yah, I'm already dreading moving the garage. Lots of big, heavy awkward things out there already. Drill press, 60 gal air compressor, rolling tool boxes, beer brewing system, welders and plasma cutter, motorcycle and ATV and all associated gear, yeah it's gonna take me a week just to move the garage if not more. But hopefully I will finally get a nice big 2 car all to myself.

At the Spokane Habitat Re-Store the volunteers scam the best tools and machinery before it gets out on the floor. I haven't found a tool bargain there in years.

There is a Restore place in Des Moines. Do all Habitat for Humanity Restore locations sell old or used tools?

For curiosity, I checked the ReStore today in Winchester, VA. They DID have a few tools, not many but there were a few. Couple handsaws, a pickaxe, a miter box, and some odds and ends specialty stuff that I would never have a use for. But it looks like if someone donates a tool, it ends up for sale.

Went to my local ReStore yesterday, really neat place, lots of newer HVAC equipment and a large amount of new cabinets and what not for kitchens....

Walked around the whole place up and down every isle found nails and screws but no tools. Walked the whole place again.... Not so much as a screwdriver. Found someone who worked there and asked where the tools were located. The reply I got was "We don't sell tools, any tools we get we keep for ourself" so much for finding some old USA made tools.

Are they firm on their prices or can you haggle some? I would be interested in their kitchen cabinets, they are poor quality but for a new bathroom vanity it wouldn't be bad....

The following were at my Elgin, IL store today. Both looked used but in good condition considering the age. This would be typical of what can be found at this store. Being on the outskirts of Chicago I suspect a lot of this comes from the Estates of people that had industrial backrounds and retired to the country.

I would have taken these home but I already have a couple of nicer grinders and a Craftsman 100 dp.

X2 on the DP being a grabber. Never seen that kind of deal in fifteen years of looking in the Spokane Re-Store.

You guys are a bad influence on me. No I'm seriously thinking about heading back tomorrow to try to pick them both up. (If one of you rats have not already brought them home.) It took every once of willpower I had to leave them there today. I really don't have the space and I don't need them at all.

Stuff like that goes pretty fast at that store. They get a lot of donations on the weekends but then are closed on Monday & Tuesday. They end up with the most stuff on the floor on Wednesday so I try to go those days if I can sneak out for an hour. I have been going over there for about two years now and that is the third Craftsman grinder I have seen. One of the other ones had a very cool Craftsman stand to go with it. They have had other drill presses in the past but never a really cool old one like that.

In the last week they sold three Craftsman radial arm saws. I suspect someone bought them to fix up and flip.

That's my bet too.

Our local one is full of absolute dreck. My small town sources at the local thrift stores tell me that the employees high grade anything decent, and I just assume that even an honest shop would watch ebay for anything that they thought had value.

The local Habitat store could stand to mark everything down about 10:1 and actually sell some of their mounds of junk tools.

I guess it's no different than most garage sales. Any estate sale is going to have male relatives cart off anything that smells like a tool, and the garage sales with tools usually value them somewhere between Tiffany jewelry and signed first editions.

Well, you guys did it. I went over and picked up the grinder today. The drill press was already gone. Thank god because I can hide another grinder from the wife but when she won't miss a drill press when it is in her parking space.

There was something new there today. A Hawk Scroll saw. I have never heard of one before but it looks amazingly well made. The price on it was $120 but from looking around eBay they go for $300+ used. There is something new every day in that store.

At our ReStore, you really can't get a good deal on things. At least if the guy running it is there you can't. His helpers...you can bargain with them. We were there the other day and 2" sash brushes were going for $8 each. Then they had some kind of what looked like a plastic putty knife or scraper. $9 each. I've seen better at Big Lots for around $2. I did get a small cabinet to set a phase converter on but it was $30. The only thing I think I got a good deal on was the paper towel units. These are the ones like you see in a factory or a business restroom, beige with a smoke colored clear front, pull the lever down to get the towels off the rolls. They had dozens at $5 a pop. I got one for my wifes craft building, one for the house garage, and one for my garage. Of the tools they had, the closest thing to a deal was a couple of Craftsman wrenches for $9 for a 7/8" and $9 for a 1". I realize the ReStore is there to make money to help in building Habitat Homes, but what ours looks like is people getting rid of their trash that they can't sell at a garage sale. I've tossed better stuff in the trash before.

Can't speak for Des Moines specifically but yes on both accounts, new and used. Prices and condition vary. Your personal success will depend on how often you go, the region, and what you are looking for.

While I am a supporter and fan of ReStore, some locations are starting to look more thrift store than hardware store. Can't argue with them making money just wish they were getting more interesting donations. Then again, if I were looking for exercise equipment . . .

laborday.jpg

Ironically, before the economic downturn, this store was so picky about what they would accept they would hand you a list. If it wasn't on the list they wouldn't take it, no matter what else was in the box. I tried to donate a bunch of used but operational locksets and was turned away. They wanted new. Took them to my local store instead, they accepted them, no problem.
