I need a nice hacksaw. Went to Home Depot. Both Klein and Stanley(Fatmax 20-531) are Chinese. Would prefer to not get Chinese if possible. Last big hacksaw thread was 2008/9 here. Things have changed. What would you reccomend for the home mechanic in 2010? (Bahco is much more expesive than others-Where is it made?)

Go check the pawnshops or put a request in the GJ classifieds. Pawns have them all the time for a couple of bucks.

Bahco has a good selection:

Some Bahco versions are also available as "Snap-On"

If you can find "Omat" from Italy in the US, that would be another option:

Bought a Nicholson (the file co.) hacksaw set a few years ago. I'm thinking, really strongly, that it was made in the USA. Don't know if that is the case anymore, but its worth looking into.

I have a USA made Buck Brother's hacksaw I've had about 15 years. It's a really well made, heavy saw. I don't think I'll ever need another one...

saw the title and thought who uses a hacksaw in 2010?. I haven't used a hacksaw since I got a sawzall. Guess I've gotten lazy!

This is probably why American manufacturers seem to be so few and far between, while the Europeans have tons (see above). Same goes for carpentry saws. There are very few nice handsaws made (or sold) in the US because every one will just pick up a circular saw . . . but over in Europe they are still frequently used.

I have an old Sandvik. It has 12 years and is like new. I think Sandvik and Bahco are today the same company.
I agree with you that non powered tools will always be necessary in a shop.
Take care

I'm the OP. Thank you all for the replies and advice(Especially Monte, who made the greatest reply post I've ever seen!) I bought a nice Stanley, made in Taiwan, that is real solid and will suit my needs well. Now I need to buy files. Looks like Nicholson or Bahco. Any comments?

FWIW, I've already spotted this at my local Home Depot. I thought it might be the OEM for Facom, but it doesn't seem like it.

yes it seems Stanley make their own saws (and Facom). Stanley owns a plant in France since several decades (measuring tools /saws) . Some hand saws and bow saws which are sold here also have "fabrication française " printed on the attached cardboard.

The made in China Klein saw I looked at was at Home Depot. I checked the inventory in 2 stores. All Chinese. The are in the electrical section. I did score some nice Klein socket drivers made in US there-at least $10 bucks less that anywhere else.

Servus,

are the Bahco hacksaws really made in Europe? I can't comment on the Bahco saws pictured above but the 208 model I bought recently was obviously made in China.

Hope this helps,

@chreese:

The older version of the Bahco 208 was made in sweden (with the clearcoat finish), the model 319 and 325 are from sweden , IIRC model 317 is from china. The Snap-On Bahco`s say Sweden and Italy as origin. (The Snap-on Bahco 208 still says sweden on their site...)
But it will be difficult to tell in the future because the newest packaging i saw only say "Design and Quality Bahco, Sweden" but no origin no more....

I gave up trying to find one that was made in America.. and was given a DeWalt for my birthday.

it works great, just a shame we can't make that here anymore apparently.

I've been looking for an A merican made frame for months. After looking through every area store, through old stock at long standing hardware stores, and various garage sales, I found an older American built Milwaukee hand held band saw. That'll show those outsourcing greedy pricks.:D

I remember seeing a program about the Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation on one of the DIY channels a few years ago. They showed a tour of the factory and proudly talked about how their tools were made in the USA. The Milwaukee Electric Tool Corporation was sold to Techtronic Industries, a Hong Kong-based company, in 2005. I 'd be awfully surprised if that saw kit wasn't made in China.

The Kleins used to be made in Sweden probably by Bahco, I would guess if SO if down grading the Williams brand as normal thats why Klein Hacksaws are now made in China.
