I had to put a new sheet of hardboard on my workbench last week......

Caused by this.....

I got a nice deal on a old cast iron frying pan at the flea market the other week and placed it in vinegar to de-rust it ......

......Well, I didn't have anything big enough to soak it in, so I picked up a inexpensive aluminum turkey pan at the grocery store.

As God as my witness I thought turkey pans could hold vinegar!!! :eyecrazy: (WKRP parody)

I left the pan to soak over the weekend and when I checked on it two days later.....a gallon of vinegar had eaten through the turkey pan and leaked all over my bench (there was still a gallon of nasty black vinegar in the skillet)

The skillet cleaned up nicely.....It's an old ('50's) 9" Lodge
(more pics in next post)

It cleaned up very good.... These pics are only the first seasoning session.
My wife has already fried up a mess of bacon and home fry potatoes and it been seasoned two more times......

If you need to do another one, cut open a plastic trash bag to line the pan with. Nice job on the skillet!

We all live and learn, sometimes the hard way. Any liquid that will remove rust is going to love aluminum. Vinegar is cheap and easy to get, but the odor drives me nuts. There are better rust removers out there.

Acid in the vinegar will do that. Ever see the alum foil that touches tomato sauce. Will eat rt through it. Always something to learn

don't feel bad, I have a nice square etched spot on my wife's granite island where I put a pan of CLR overnight to de-rust a Stanley steel ruler. never would have guessed you could mess up granite. I promised her one day I would get a diamond wheel and polish it out but never did...

We run vinegar in the dish washer occasionally - and are real careful with it around the granite. Any acidic liquid will attack the sealer and the rock.

I only use white vinegar as a rinse in the washer. No stink, no gummy build up and it helps set colors. And it's way cheap.

If you would use the prefinished white stuff, like they use in camper and mobile home showers, it would no have soaked in.
The only thing I have had problems with is acetone.
