Guy in the shop next door did this one this morning tightening a radiator hose clamp... Seriously! Couldn't believe it myself! he wasn't using it as a prybar or chisel either. Snappy will replace it but damn! Everyone gets a clunker some time!

I'm no SO fanboy, but I have a hard time believing this. How did he manage to break the shank in 2 places? Seems like once it broke in 1 place, no way to cause it to break in another.

No doubt I would not have believed it myself, but exactly WASN'T doesn't mean Hasn't but I do know he has prybars on his tool cart, and takes pretty good care of his tools. Not SURE how you can even tighten a clamp THAT tight!

We had a buddy in HS who would snap or strip bolts all the time. We called him Torque Arm. Back then we listened to Judas Priest too. We renamed "Love Bites" to "Torque Arm Strikes".

When you feel safe
When you feel warm
That's when I rise
That's when I crawl

Gliding on mist
Hardly a sound
Bring the kiss
Evils abound

In the dead of night, Torque Arm strikes...He strikes.

Wow, I just nostalgia'd pretty hard.

That doesnt appear to be a torsion failure of the shaft... I have strong suspicion is was used as a prybar.

That lower break is definitely not a rotational break. That nib at the break would show a rotational twist.
pry bar...just sayin..

Besides who uses a screw driver of that size to tighten a hose clamp?

The explanation for the double break is simple. He was reefing on a hose clamp for some raisin, and the tip broke off. He then went *Expletive*! and threw it at the wall, breaking the shaft off the handle. After a few minutes he went over and picked up the three pieces and said "better call the Snap-onmun".

If it was Craftsman, it wouldn't matter why it broke, just get a new one. Just saying.

I'm pretty new here at GJ, and hearing that SO can be a challenge to get an item warrantied is interesting.

Actually No I don't know the Snap-On guy, and the guy is not a co-worker he works in the shop next door, They build Drift Cars and all sorts of Ricey turbo stuff, I don't work there I just happened to see the thing, and see it happen. I don't have a dog in this fight and I am a Snap-On fan... I would imagine it is a flaw, I've broken the tip off a Number 2 Phillips way back in the day and my favorite screwsticks are Snappy Hard Handles... Happened this morning.... I don't know what forces the thing was subjected to before but the length was to reach a clamp the size was convenient. He has plenty of other screwdrivers and I have never known him to be given to lying.

I have NEVER had a snap-on dealer refuse a warranty unless he just didn't have the item on the truck or a suitable sub, I have had "sears" Craftsman be a gigantic pain in the *** about a ratchet... Sockets etc the Department store engineer was absolutely sure it had been used on an impact.... it had not... I've sent Snappy a photo of a broken flex ratchet via E-mail and they shipped me a replacement (I broke it but it was a buddy's ratchet) I gave him the replacement and he took his broken one to his snap-on dealer and they warrantied it again... No questions. Just my experience with them. I haven't turned wrenches professionally in many many years but I love my Snap-On tools.

If you notice, those "nibs" are on opposite sides at each break. That tells me that screwdriver was being bent when it broke.

I can see it doing that if it missed its tempering process, and was at quenching hardness...
Imagine a knife blade thats been quenched, and not tempered, and bend or twist it. I can see it snapping into more then 2 pieces.
Just a thought.
Im NOT callIing bs.

If mine broke in the handle like that, it wold only be a second before I was putting a wrench on that shank to see if i cold strip the hose clamp.

Torsion failure will generally cause a spiral fracture but if the material is is brittle enough the failure can look like this. In this case it almost certainly did not get properly annealed. Breaking again when hitting a wall is additional evidence of the same. All companies will occasionally make mistakes. The frequency of occurrence and even more importantly, how they take care of it is what is important.

Clamp was probably on a 36" Alaskan oil pipeline.

Well at least we established your level of ethics, and that you would never defraud Snapon. :dunno:

even the screwdrivers from the dollar store wouldn't break like that , had to be a manufacture defect , hardened only not tempered.

"Flaw"? That screwdriver looks like it's been used 1000 times, but somehow it waited to fail on a house clamp? ...In two spots? :p

Your buddy next door must be messing with you..

Look at the break closest to the tip. That was no doubt from prying force not twisting.
