So I was thinking of picking up a set of half moon and a set of "S" wrenches. There are times at work when they would really come in handy. However, I don't want to spend a ton of money on them. I looked on Amazon at the Sunex and Gearwrench branded wrenches. The reviews on them weren't great. Does anyone have any experience with these or have a suggestion on another set of wrenches? Remember I don't really want to spend a ton of money on them. I won't be using them all day every day. Thanks.

I bought half moons because it seemed like I had a lot of uses for them. Honestly I wouldn't buy them again. Once in a while I use them, but really not needed. Buy a set of torque adapters, far more handy for many hard to get fasteners.

I have a couple S-type SAE wrenches. I'm no pro, but I think I remember using 1 size once. They are just drawer weight for me.

I have more bent/cut/welded wrenches that I made from the junk tool pile that have worked better for me than store bought obstruction wrenches.
But some common size cheap yard sale or HF wrenches and throw them in an old hand tool box in the garage. When you need something special just make it. It might work better.

Torque adapters? It seems like I know what you're talking about, but can you throw a link up please?

Wish I had some or the proper Dodge Tool to get a turbo off a 6.7 Cummins today. Would of saved my elbow.

15mm angle wrench? It seems to make the job a lot easier on a 5.9. Also taking out the inner fender helps with a 5.9 too.

Half moon wrenches were known for years as "starter and manifold" wrenches. I know it is essential to remove the starter on a Chrysler flat head 6 cyl engine. I have a couple of them, and sometimes find them to be the best tool for the job.

Yeah the Half moon 15mm with the 3/8 on the opposite end? Had the fender liner off, got three of the nuts loose just the one behind the turbo closest to the block didnt want to cooperate.

I have a set on Snap on SAE half moons I purchased 20 years ago on sale. Can't say I have used more than a couple of them, and only couple of times.

Always wanted a set of metric s wrenches. I did buy a 13mm s wrench from a Snap on dealer to use on air cooled VW engines. Never did spring for full set. Bought a couple of GearWrench 13 x 15mm s wrenches on clearance from Northern Tool 10 years or so ago. Never took them out of packaging. Ended up giving them to friends. Don't think they have used them either.

I purchased a very high quality, but very expensive set of Facom half moon spanners about 9 years ago.

I haven't used any of them... Not once [emoji55]

I've got a handful of half moon wrenches but never use them!

I use S wrenches occasionally, but quite often when I go to use one, the radius is wrong for the application! If I was buying again I'd probably be tempted by the Nepros which incorporate 2 different radii!

I've been quite tempted by the Nepros as well, but this thread is making me reconsider

I picked up the Gearwrench 2 piece SAE and 2 piece metric S-shaped wrench sets years ago when Northern Tool put them on clearance for $7.49 each. I later found the GW 4 piece SAE and 5 piece metric halfmoon sets on clearance at Sears Outlet and thought, "Those might come in handy someday." I'm just a DIYer but not a single wrench has ever been used. :dunno:

I have one, a Bonney starter & manifold, never used it yet, I too would like some shiny Nepros ones, but these types of wrenches definitely are a rare use type thing, like my Hazet 610N.

I have a half moon set and a starter/injector wrench from Mac. Working on Deere farm tractors, yes, I have used them in starter removal as well as injection pump removal. I have used the half moons on other tractors for the occasional odd location as well.

this is my only 1/2 moon wrench...

slightly modified for one particular bolt on a JD crawler...
havent used it since the early 90's

only other obstruction wrench i have is the SO version of deere's starter wrenches...
it gets used every couple years on a non-deere starter...

I have removed and replaced enough starters that I'd like to have a set in my box. However, there is TONS of stuff I'd rather use the money for. Like a great set of dikes and as many American made vice grips I can find.
If I do go with half moon or s wrenches I will ABSOLUTLEY buy the ratcheting type. There is NO OTHER bolt or nut on a car that you do not want to have to take off and try to put back on because you moved it an 8th of an inch. ESPECIALLY when everything is hot under there and you have to get on the road in a hurry.
