When its late and all the stores are closed and your shop is thirty min from a tiny hick town and your tired as hell then you will need them. I never have had to use any until awhile back. But if you get in a bind they will pay for themselves . I was also in a money bind so i bought a set of sae & metric ESSEX from tooltopia. Get a set in case your **** gets in a major bind !!!

Like he said. you'll need them when you least expect it and if you dont have them your screwed. they come in handy for some fuel pumps and air compressors or accessory drives.

I don't think he is going to be working on cars and trucks with air compressors and cam driven fuel pumps but I agree completely. I use my 5/8-3/4 and 11/16-13/16 on damn near a daily basis.

I bought a lovely high quality expensive set 6 years ago, put them in a drawer and there
they have stayed ever since. I have stripped an engine, done usual servicing, brakes
changed my rear exhaust and servicing and a cam belt of my sisters little fiddly french
tin can... and never have come close to needing them.

Still, they keep my offset spanners company in the drawer when I'm not around,
so at least I didn't waste my money. :D

Which brands are best bang for the buck?

Like most of the crew here, I don't use mine much. So, my advice is to prowl the pawn shop bins and swap meets for used wrenches. I've seen Proto half moon wrenches more often than any other brand and have scored them for around 2 bucks a wrench. :) 1/2" to 5/8" are probably the most prevalent (and most useful as far as SAE).
