Half-"restoration" on Craftsman top/bottom boxes

A couple weeks ago I picked up this top and bottom set up off craigslist for $60. Thanks to jakemac, I found the top box was date coded May 1980 and the bottom is April 1980. A previous owner had spray painted the entire left side of the top box black, for some reason, and the bottom box had some overspray and a little surface rust. The keys were also missing and the steel casters were pretty well worn, so the brakes barely worked. Otherwise, the boxes were in pretty good shape. The drawers slid nicely and the paint on the top box was still decent. It had some Saturn logos stenciled on the right side. I'm not big on patina, but I thought it'd be neat to keep the Saturn logos' especially since Saturn is defunct and it part of the boxes' history, maybe from the '90's. So I decided to do a "half restoration" by cleaning it up and painting the parts which required it.

I sanded the black spray paint off the side of the top box and taped it off. The parts that needed paint were primed and painted with Rustoleum Sunrise Red. It's not a perfect match, but it's pretty dang close for an off-the-shelf color.

I used rubbing and polishing compound on the rest of the top box as well as all of the drawers; they all shined up really nice, especially the top box and the "door" for the bottom box. I had to sand, prime, and respray the whole exterior of the bottom box as it looked like a lot of the red was a bad spray paint job. I pulled the slides, cleaned them in the parts washer and installed them and the drawers with wheel bearing grease.

Today at the flea market I found a new set of casters, exactly like the ones on my 2007 Craftsman box. It was complete luck that I came across them and picked the whole set up for $20.

I looked for a replacement lock set from Sears, but for this particular pair I would have to piece a working pair together from 2 kits ($40 total) or order the parts individually from searspartsdirect (~$16 a piece). A local locksmith told me he could cut the keys using the lock #'s for $10 a piece and I'd get two keys for each lock. So I cleaned them up with the Dremel and took them in. When I picked them up a couple hours later the bottom lock only had 1 key. Long story short, they miscalculated their costs and instead of sticking to their word and eating th cost to stick to the deal, they figured I should compromise with them without having asked me.

Either way, here's the finished product. They're not showroom new, but not bad for 36 years old and they should serve me well for a long time since I'm not one to beat up on my boxes.

Looks great. I think I have that same top box (I think mine might have two sets of small drawers though?). 1980 would be a good guess. Where's the date code and how do you interpret it?)

Pretty cool. Finding those casters really was a stroke of good luck. I have a Craftsman bottom cab of similar vintage with same handle style and badge. Not sure if your drawers are full black or not, but mine are a dark gray and it's a five drawer. I wish I had a matching top chest to go with it. I paid a good bit more than $60 for my bottom cab. Nice score.

Thank, guys.

The date code on the top box is inside the very top(under the lid), on the left side of the bottom towards the front of the box. I guess date "stamp" would be more proper than "code"(used to cars) as mine says
"Made in USA
S05-80"

The drawers on both boxes are gray; part of the reason I didn't want to paint them, as I would probably paint them black if I had to. I'd imagine that gray would be hard to match in a rattle can.

Thanks. Mine actually looks very similar but has three sets of rows on top. The drawers on top span 1/3 of the width. 3 on the left, 3 on the right and one deep one in the middle. Date code is right where you said it would be. 07 83. No stamp with USA though. I found some cool stuff, LOL. A Craftsman 1/4 drive set, a Husky 3/8 drive set, a couple of spark plug gap tools, a set of files and a nice nylon brush among others, LOL. I probably haven't looked in that box top in the past 25 years (although the Husky set is newer than that, I think somebody gave it to me a while back), ha, ha...

Sorry for taking it off topic, I think your restoration came out great!

Props for keeping the stenciled Saturn logos!

You state "...part of the boxes' history" in your reasoning; did these spend some time at a dealership, or was the previous owner an enthusiast of sorts?

Saturn aside, the refurb turned out great! Just enough work without losing any of the character. I'd love to track down some similar-era Craftsman rollers. Maybe whenever I settle into a more permanent residence.

That's part of the mystery of the boxes now as I have no idea. They seem kind of small to have been used at a dealer :dunno:.

The guy I bought the boxes from was into bicycles and a lot of the stickers in the lid were for bicycle stuff. I would have left them, but they were placed over pieces of old paint can labels that were also stuck in there and ripped off.

This is exactly what I was going for and why I posted the thread. It seems that most either do a full resto or leave their boxes unrestored. I just thought I'd try something in the middle and share my results. The Sunrise Red was a great match, although not exact. I also purchased Regal Red and spray both onto index cards to compare; Regal Red looked too dark. Also Sunrise Red looks like it would be an even closer match on my middle box(set behind these boxes) which is only a few years old.
Also, the bigger, newer style casters bolted right on using other pre-drilled holes. I guess Waterloo drilled the boxes for two different bolt patterns and stuck with those patterns for at least 30 years.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. I'm very happy with the results. Just need to make room in the garage now...

I have an old beater I wouldn't mind moving around and retiring another one in its place simply be cause it has more room. The beater could benefit from simple paint like the op did on this. Its a similar box and not worth a fussy resto but really useful in its own right as super economical storage.
It would cost hundreds to replace, maybe a day to service and a hundred in materials/purchace, not bad return for the effort.
