Half Size Metrics 4.5, 5.5?

What are they used for? I am looking to fill out a set of 1/4" drives and I'm missing both shallow and deep in these two sizes. Of course Im missing 15mm too but that seems huge for a 1/4" drive...

15mm is great for access reasons.

Fords use 5.5mm on several things, and my Grandmothers turn of the century buick century has 5.5mm fasteners under the dash (heater fan).

Ford likes to use 5.5's on a lot of splash guards. They could use a regular size but nooooooo Ford has to screw you. I was lucky to have a 5.5 the 1st time I encountered them.

Yes it is but like I eluded to in post #10, I think that maybe it's not in some metric 1/4" drive kits because most SAE 1/4" drive kits do include a 7/32", which also works for 5.5MM.

At any rate, I'm not going to get one. I already got sucked in on the "20MM" thread when I realized I didn't have one or anything that crosses over. Went and got 20MM sockets in both shallow and deep today.

It truly is a sickness.

Snap On has a 7/32 / 5.5mm special tool for doing the TFI modules on Ford distributors. Pretty handy, I've had mine for a while.

GM seems to really like those goofy half sizes. 5.5's are really common, I have a 9.5mm deep socket sitting in my box that's been used a total of once for dropping the ****** pan on an '88 Celebrity.

9.5MM = 3/8" (less than .001" difference)

I can't remember exactly what led to my throwing in the towel and buying that stupid socket, but I do remember trying everything in the box and not being able to get one nut loose.

To this day it stands as my only ¼ drive metric deep socket and my only Williams socket.

Xerox copy machines also use 5.5 mm hex head screws. A friend gave me a Xerox 5.5 mm magnetic nut driver that works great on the instrument panel of my 1995 Caprices. The magnetic feature is a life-saver. I haven't dropped one of those screws yet -- even in the salvage yard.
