Hi all,

Firstly, I want to mention that I've been a long time lurker in TGJ forums - long before I made my first post here - and even longer before I made an account. I've always been tempted to post up my projects, but instead wondered out through the galleries and forgot why I came in the first place.

Anyways, I recently upgraded from my first house - 1300sqft split entry on .25 acres w/ 22x20, 2 car attached garage to my new place. 2500 finished sqft rambler on 5.5 acres with attached 3 car and detached 40x60 shop. This thread will be dedicated to my new shop, which I'm naming the Halfasd Garage - partially in thanks to my 85 GTI, which may make an appearance or two - and also because of all the half-finished projects laying around.....

Without further rambling:

I've already done a bunch of small projects since we moved in - Oct 2015 - but I haven't spent a ton of time organizing or optimizing my setup. Between interior home upgrades + car projects, I simply didn't have the bandwidth.

Here is the mess as of yesterday...

Upstairs - working on organizing car/atv parts + ebaying stuff I no longer need:

Thanks for looking.

Thanks Turbo. As you said - lot's of potential.

Taking notes from a few other members, I've been trying to choose bite-sized projects throughout the work week, in order to make headway on my laundry list of projects. Over the last few weeks I've managed to install 2x Delta ceiling mount air filtration systems, paint booth filters and 2x Liftmaster 8500 jackshaft garage door openers.

One filter above the service door..

The other, opposite corner, above welding bench. This is an interesting perspective from my stairs to upper level.

Inside paint booth facing towards the rest of the garage. Added the copper and air fittings from the air compressor upstairs. Have to mount my hose reel soon and figure out the water line coming out of the floor. More on that topic soon. Yeah, that is a vanity from the master bathroom - nearly finishing that project too.

I was able to get a few things done tonight after work too.
First, I replaced the brushes in my 36v Dewalt impact and hammer drills
20170322_170333

Removed the stuck fuel pump from the GLI and got it functional again
20170322_203222

Had to begin the teardown of the F450. The 80's trucks had issues with thin firewalls rusting and the clutch master cylinder pushing through into the engine compartment. Luckily mine failed at work in the parking lot - was able to get it home without significant issues. Got everything torn out - just need to create a template of the reinforcement plate and make it on the plasma cutter.

Lastly, just for fun, I made a sign to hang from my ibeam - I figured it was fitting for the title of my thread...

Going to hang the letters on the other side of this:

Thanks again for the inspiration!

Thanks!

Actually, my wife had planned numerous house showings when we were shopping. I wasn't really interested in any of them. This house listing didn't show any pictures of the shop... I drove up and this building was there. Needless to say, we made an offer.

Pretty solid weekend, thought I'd give an update.

Worked on some cars:
- Ram 1500 - ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings
- Sienna - brake pads
- my saab 97x - 1x front wheel bearing
- my f450 - tore everything out to add a firewall stiffener, the clutch master is pushing through into engine compartment...

For the shop, I'm working on a lighting upgrade, paint and plumbing.

Lighting:
In the main shop I have a 4x5 array of generic single bulb CFLs, and an additional 2x2 over the pallet racking. The paint booth has 10x 8' long, 2 bulb fluorescent fixtures - i'm going to convert these to LED to get rid of the cold start and humming problems. In the main shop, I'm going to install LED T8 fixtures in the 4x5 array, but leave the 2x2 as CFLs. Of the 20 t8 fixtures i'm installing, 8 of them are 6 bulb reflector style, which i'm going to install over the hoist and work benches along the back.

Here is a wireframe view of the garage, simply showing the 4x5 array.
Wireframe Lighting

The 2 bulb fixtures will likely be purchased from Bees Lighting, as it is the best option/price i've seen so far.

Here is an image of one of my 6 bulbs that I hung yesterday to compare to the CFL.

Paint:
Regarding the paint scheme, I think i'm going to go with 'frank blue' for the block section of my walls (lowest 4', external walls), and 'coventry gray' for the drywall.

The one problem I have, is that the drywall on the walls has separated at some seams. I'm wondering if I should bother to re mud the seams before I paint. The cracks will likely just re-form after the first winter, though...

Plumbing:
The shop has an incoming 1" water line, and a 4'' septic line. From the looks of it, the PO either simply roughed it in during the build and capped the end in the yard, or he has an in ground valve somewhere. I cut the 1" pipe open and fed a wire snake down it to try and find the end, but haven't had any luck. A utility locator is likely on the horizon.

I trenched 2x 2" pvc pipes from the house to the shop to carry coaxial and ethernet cables. I'm going to be installing a TV + shop audio system when time permits.

Lastly for now, does anyone know what this tool is? I recently picked it up in a misc bin and haven't been able to figure it out...

Thanks again!

Thanks Jim.

Didn't get as much done as I had hoped to tonight - ended up chatting with the neighbor for a few hours. Going to order up my lighting here in a few minutes, hopefully see it before the weekend!!!

Well, it has been about a year. I've been busy landscaping and finishing projects within the house, and haven't done a great job of updating this thread. Thought maybe I'd show some progress on the shop... I can go into more detail on anything of interest. :rocker:

1st - built the kegerator - need beer for projects

built some custom posts off the deck for hanging a shade sail ... needs some revising, but worked for the summer

Built some custom suspension for my ATV. Went to Silver Lake and Glamis, cracked the frame in a few spots... now rebuilding the frame.

Glamis:

Stock:

Building new:

Tearing apart again...

Molded a bunch of parts at the hobby shop

Got a pair of CNC machines w/ my buddy erodz.

in place:

Tearing down the VF0 - x axis guides and trucks are shot

Installed perfectphase 20hp digital phase converter, panel + air...

All for now.

Mine too, the 85 gti is a vr swap, the 91 gli is stock 16v with a bunch of bolt-ons. built the GTI, got the GLI the way it is.:3gears:

I've had more mk2 GTI's than I can remember...still have 2 big bumper 16v's...I just can't resist the quad round headlights on the 91-92.

Nice grab on the CNC machine too!!

Yeah, vw's typically multiply. I've had piles of them. Only drove the gti 1 time this last summer though - just don't have time.

Hoping to order the new X rails at the end of this week, so I can get the second machine operational soon! Waiting on tool holders from a guy, and will be cutting chips soon.

Thats a nice caddy in your avatar too!
