I need to buy a new hammer drill for work. Once in a while I will use it to drill 1/8" holes in concrete floors to hold carpet fastners. (I install floorcovering) I do not want a large drill, I have a big ol' Milwalkee. I think I would like to have a small electric. I have seen them rated by amps starting at 5 and going to 8. I will only need this drill for another year, so I do not feel the need to buy the biggest and the baddest. What drill do I need and what do amps have to do with the performance of the drill.

If that is all you are going to do with and it doesnt need to last forever. I do not think you want to spend the money for SDS however they are the best and the fastest drilling.

What is your price range? 100 to 200?

Amperage defines how heavy duty the tool is going to be. If there are two

contenders, I always go for the one with the higher amp rating. Sounds like you will

be content with a "homeowners" version of the power tool. But then again, if you are

going to spend the money for a particular tool, then why not one that will stand the

test of time ? You may want to do something more HD in the future.

I just sold my Milwaukee 3/8" HD, 5.5 amp, in excellent condition- would have worked well for your use. Including a few bits, it sold for $45. Try craigslist- they show up occasionally.
