Hammer Drill Bits

I'm looking at percussion drill bits, and I'm curious. I've got a real nice corded 1/2" milwaukee hammer drill that's a real workhorse. I've traditionally gone out and bought bits when I needed them, so I have a weird random assortment of stuff, not a real good index.

My real question here is, can you use the SDS bits (like the bosch ones sold at HD) in a standard-chuck hammer drill? I like em cause you can get em a lot longer than standard small percussion drill bits. It looks to me like there's enough area on the shank of the SDS bit for the chuck to grab on to, even w/ the pockets machined in there.

Thanks,
Adam

I have used the bosch style hammer bits in my dewalt 18V quite a bit. I just chuck em up like anything else. Seems to work well, just don't get them stuck.

I wouldn't use my SDS bits in a standard chuck. I want to be able to use them in the rotary hammer like they are made for. They could get chewed up in a standard chuck rather fast. I guess if I didn't have a roto hammer and needed a bit I couldn't purchase in the standard shank.... You may have enough room on the end of the longer bits to cut off the SDS part and get a nice round part of the shank to grip on.

You can definitely put an SDS Plus bit in a standard chuck and given that the SDS system uses the slots on the side of the bit to lock it in place ,I don't think that you'd damage your bit.
