hammer drill

can I get a decent hammerdrill that wont break under 100$???
I want to use a flatpaddle bit mostly for chipping away old cement....

For chipping on a regular basis you are going to want a pretty good sized hammer drill with drill cutout option or just an electric chipping hammer. The used route would be in your favor. I have a bosch electric jack hammer that always produces a good laugh when pulled out. Now that thing will do some chipping. If this is just for one job, I'd go rent one.

To expand this question I was wondering if cordless hammer drill will handle drilling holes up to 1/2" in concrete. Is it just better to get a good corded model?

Do you mean a rotary hammer? Rotary hammer with hammer-only mode would be a better bet.

Are there even any hammer drills which have hammer-only modes?

Depends on the model.

I tested Bosch 12V Max and Milwaukee M12 hammer drills in block with 3/8" bits. A good 18V should be able to drill 1/2" holes. Whether it'll be quick and you'll be comfortable is a different story.

My corded Bosch can handle it easily.

I don't regret going corded one bit, even if today's cordless hammer drills were available when I purchased my Bosch. It gets used infrequently, and by now I'd have had to replace the batteries once or twice already.

Any of the above would do what you are needing for under $100. The Hitachi is a great deal at the sale price.

My Makita 18V cordless drill set to hammer-drill mode does half inch holes in old concrete without a problem. It's fine for occasional use like that. If you were going to drill holes it all day, I'd look at a corded Bosch.

Go corded for big holes, cordless for small ones, and go for a rotary hammer for hammer-only chisel options - not a lot of cheap cordless ones available and those that are aren't usually hammer-only.
