Hammer handle

I am trying to find a replacement curved wooden handle for my hammer. My hammer eye is a rectangle. Any advice?

House Handle is a regular suggestion on the forum. I personally like Vaughan and Baker ProTools replacement handles.

Seymour/Link is widely available but I am not a fan.

There is the option of making your own which is what I do. Hickory or Ash will work quite well.

Unless you already have a nice piece of hickory laying around and all the right tools and the time to shape a nice handle, it is hard to beat a new one from a big box store for 10-15 bucks. Here is a hickory 18 incher in that price range.
If you are restoring an antique for display, ignore my suggestion.
If you just need something to pound in a few 10d nails either buy a new one for less money or hit up a few garage sales. I have at least 10 hammers and didn't buy more than one or two of them in a retail store.

A well stocked hardware store or tool distribtutor sells handles. They are held in by a wooden wedge that you hammer in and trim off, if necessary. You might have to trim the outside to get it into the head but don't take off any more than you have to. You want a tight fit. If a head loosens up you just pound on the wedge again. If you can't find one locally, go on line. It is a generic item. I have replaced handles. Just pick one that looks right and has about the same dimensions as your old one.

The problem I've run into is finding a curved handle. I prefer it over a straight handle. Every curved handle I find is a tear drop or oval eye.

I always make my own. My wife always wondered why I was buying that old baseball bat, or that broken axe handle. Course I had a band saw then but nothing wrong with a good bit of hand labour. Its not the cost it's the....... awe what the hell it is the cost. I wont spend $15.00 on a handle when I can make one for time. That little ****** next door won't miss his damn bat anyway. Serve him right for leaving it laying around.

I used to put them on my hammers also. I took a curved axe handle, cut the front and back to what I needed and fit the sides. I made some smaller wedges, along with the main wedge. I epoxy coat the handle and wedges, drive in handle, drive in main wedge, then use smaller wedges to fill gaps in the sides(they are usually towards the front). I then cut off excess wedges and drive in steel wedge. Then I put it into a vise and fill in any other voids with epoxy. Never had a problem with them getting loose.

A 28 0z might require a little longer handle than the standard axe one. Like stated above check out house handle and see what they have in stock. Might need a "house axe" handle and work it from there.

Is the hammer that special, most of the time I find it cheaper in the long run to just get a whole new hammer.
With that said, I do have 3 extra hammer handles in my hammer drawer. (found them at a yard sale for a quarter each.

I've got a double bit axe handle and a sledge hammer handle coming to me from House Handle. The TH website was less friendly. Probably could have been just as satisfied and come out cheaper (no shipping) at a big box but I thought well why the heck not.

I bought a hand sledge handle at a True Value, they had a very decent selection. I recommend a similar "full service" hardware store for you, just remember to bring the old hammer in with you preferably before you take the handle off.

It's cheaper to just replace the handle. I have straight handles for it, though they are harder to find than a tear drop or oval. Plus, I like my hammer.

I've looked at my local True Value and they don't have any handles period. I found one at Sears on clearance, none since. I've seen them at Menards, but the closest one to me is 45 minutes away, cheaper to just order it online.

My local (both of them) have handles but one store is higher priced than the other. I'm actually planning on stopping by to grab a handle for a shingle hatchet today. I'll look to see what all they have.

Other than looking at the non-existant stock on hand, did you inquire with the staff about ordering what you need or what ? I've had my store special order a part in for me a few times.

I picked up a handle for my hatchet the other day and took a picture of the mfg sticker. They didn't have anything like you mentioned in stock but the stick might lead you in the right direction. Unfortunately, PB is down at the moment and I'm unable to link the pic of the mfg sticker.

Also check out Thehammersource.com, they carry Vaughn replacement handles and you might be able to match one of their curved handles to your head.

I always like to "sight" the handle myself while selecting them. Mase sure the handle grain runs parallel with the axis of the head. These will be the strongest.

Well, I've had a less than satisfactory experience with House Handle. I will speak to the highest supervisor tomorrow and let him know how poorly they've "conducted business" with me. I never got the handles and now they're being difficult with the refund.

Harry Epstein sells some of the house handle hammer handles pretty reasonable. I prefer both the Vaughn and Seymour brand replacement handles over the House handle.
HH are a lot cheaper to purchase. A Seymour made ball pein handle at my local hardware store will run $7-8 and a HH runs about $3-3.50.
